Your Next Move: Outdoors— :

By JOHN PETER : "“S70U can move outdoors simply by stepping outside your house. But if youTare going to pass long sum: mer hours there, you had better do some planning. One of the easiest and best places to move is to the

porch. If this sounds like going back to Grandfather's day, remember Grandad had some good ideas too. On summer evenings his broad old-fashioned front porch with its wooden rockers and upholstered glider seemed about {the most comfortable place in town. As the years passed neighbors moved closer, streets were widened and traffic increased. The porch lost both its sense of quiet and its feeling of privacy. The family retreated to the living room or {ook to the hills or to the seashore. ~ » » IT'S ONLY NOW that we are learning how to relax and live in our own backyard— creating privacy and planning easier living—that the porch is coming back into its own. Let's look at the porch— either front or back porch—as a room for outdoor living. It has a roof, floor and, at least one wall, You may want to add awnings to improve the shade on the sunny side or paint the ceilings a flat white to take advantage of reflected light, but generally the roof needs little attention. The floor, however, generally

The right furnishings, for instance, can relieve you of many chores. The ideal seating, froth the standpoint of maintenence, is a rock but it leaves much to be desired in comfort. Modern outdoor chairs are generally a compromise between comfort and maintenance, x B® LJ ” THEY ARE made of wood or metal and. combined with canvas, plastic, cord or reed. Some of the best furniture can be built-in. Benches you can build yourself on sawbuck tables, around trees or against walls. Outdoor enamel and glass topped ones are excellent and low-cost for hot weather use. If you pick choose your furnishings well, by the end of the summer - you'll agree that moving outdoors was the hest move you ever made.

Mother's Attitude Is Key To Teen-Ager's Popularity

By RUTH MILLETT F VERY now and then I get a really pathetic letter from a teen-age girl who wants to know how to be popular with girls her own age. Advice to the girl, in a case like that, isn't nearly as important as advice to the girl’

mother. 8o this column is for |

the mother’s consideration. First of all, that you really like your daughter’s friends. If you are critical of them, they'll sense it, no matter how hard you try to cover up. If you go to the other extreme and gush over them, you'll make them uncomfortable. The way to make them feel at ease at your house is to treat them as people you like, being neither palsy-walsy nor aloof.

Ruth Millett

Ld » LJ

SECOND, let them have the run of your house. They may be noisy and at times they may be silly and they may be a bit hard on the furniture. But if you want your daughter to be one of the crowd, let her bring home friends whenever she likes and see to it that they feel welcome, Third, don’t encourage your daughter to think she is better than the girls she associates with. The girl who acts superior doesn’t stand much chance to be one of the crowd.

FOURTH, don't encourage your daughter to pick out flaws in the girls she wishes were friendly. That is easy balm for her hurt pride, but it won't do her any lasting good. Instead, trys to help her see the good “qualities in others. The person who has that habit always has friends. Fifth, try to teach your daughter early in life that to fit into any group you have to find a role that you can fill.
