SECOND SECTION
‘Streetcar’ Is Ahead In Awards Race
By Kathleen Cvengros . Movie-goérs may be viewing an Academy Award-win-ning picture Friday if the opinion of critics means anything
—and it often does.
“Streetcar Named Desire,” starting Friday at the
Circle, for the first time at popular prices, has been heralded as a potential Award winner of the year. “Aaron Slick From Punkin Crick” which stars Alan Young and Dinah Shore starts Friday at the Indiana and promises to be a real rib-tickler. Loew’s brings to the screen Saturday one of the most magnificent productions seen in a long time, “African Queen,” starring Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. A release of one of the most intensely dramatic movies ever made is scheduled for Friday at the Esquire when “Of Mice and Men” featuring Lon Chaney Jr. and Burgess Meredith, opens. Also playing is “Sundown” with Gene Tierney and George Saunders. Wednesday finds “Return of the Texan,” starring Dale Robertson and Walter Brennan, ready to open at the Lyric. Held over for a second week, but moving to Keith's this time, is “Viva Zapata!” with Marlon Brando and Jean Peters sharing the billing. The Ritz theater, in Keeping with its new pelicy, “Curtain Time 8:30,” brings to the screen “The Browning Version’ with Michael Redgrave and Jean Kent, beginning Tuesday.
Hoosier Stars
Karl Malden, his original Broadway stage role for the picturization of “A Streetrar Named Desire,” once worked as a steel worker in factories lorated in his home town of Gary, Ind. Malden first answered the lure of the theater by attending (Goodman Theater in Chicago. After a trying few months in New York, he got his first big break in “Golden Boy.” From then on, he became identified as one of the footlight’s first ranking character leading men, with outstand-
who appears in
ing performances in “Key Largo” and “All My Sons.” “Streetcar” is the extraordinary play that won the Pulitzer Prize and the New_York Drama Critics’" Award in the course of its Broadway run and is well in the running for Academy Awards for three of its stars, Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh and Kim Hunter.
Just. an Ordinary Guy The star of “Aaron Slick From Punkin Crick” is a young fellow with the “every man” look in his face. Alan Young plays the role of a shy rural bumpkin who somehow sends the city slicker— Robert Merrill — into rapid retreat. He sings, dapces and clowns his way through” the elaborate musical which also stars Dinah Shore. Born in England and raised in British Columbia, Mr. Young hit the big. time_by a fluke, He was writing and starring in his own comedy show. on the Canadian Broddcasting Corp. when a talent agent dialed the program by accident in New York. He was immediately taken ‘by the freshness of the material and performance and arranged to put Young on the American networks as summer replacement for Eddie Cantor.
Award Winner “The Browning Version,” won awards. at Berlin Film Festivals recently, At* Michael Redgrave and Jean Kent both received top acting awards, and at Berlin, Redgrave was awarded top honors. The film has also been selected hy the National Board of Review as ‘one of the top .10 foreign films of the year.” Adapted for the screen by TerRattigan from his own successful play, the film is an absorhing drama of a school teacher who commands little respect from

No Place Like Texas
“Return of the Texan” tells of the homecoming of a capable, robust young man, Dale Robertson, who finds city life unbearable after the death of his young wife. He decides to bring his two small children back to the land on which he was raised. Working again on the soil, under the sun, the widower finds his interest in life reborn and is again able to meet the challenges of nature as they confront him and are pointed out by his still agile grandfather.
