Horse Meat Sales Draw U. S. Fire
WASHINGTON, Mar. 14 (UP) «~The government acted yesterto prevent any repetition of oh $1 million ring which is said to have sold ground mixtures of horse meat and beef at hamburger prices. It issued a new regulation, effective Wednesday, which bans the sale of ground meat or sausage made from mixtures of horse meat and other meats such as beef or pork. It also requires all products containing horse meat to be labelled as such. Simultaneously, the Office of Price Stabilization imposed new dollars and cents ceilings on horse meat. The ceilings will mean rollbacks for some sellers but will leave at about current levels prices of canned and frozen horse meat products used as food for dogs and other animals. Retail ceilings for inspected horse meat in the Midwest area, where production is highest, range from 20 cents a pound for ground horge meat to 42 cents for tenderloins.
