in Marion County.
In 1945, the County Council apfor the same purpose. But the vault was never built and $752 in interest charges went down the drain.
Now, County Commissioners are planning to use a $65,000 bond issue for a vault to house a clutter of-old records which have been branded a Courthouse “firetrap.” The fire hazard was reported to commissioners last week by State Fire Marshal Alex Hougland. He
warned them to clean up the fourth floor “mess” or face state action,
Approved Transfer
Commissioner Jesse A. Hutsell sald today county attorneys had approved transfer of the $65,000 voted‘last summer for Courthouse remodeling to the vault consttruction project, “I'd like to start on it as soon as the ground thaws,” he said. Since the ambitious 1945 program apparently was forgotten, the $40.000 reverted to the county sinking fund in 1949, records of the County Auditor showed today. Mr. Hutsell also said a meeting of city and county officials will be held tomorrow to study plans for erection of “a combined citycounty building on the Courthouse square. Receives Letters
He said public sentiment for the proposed office building is shaping up, Today he. received four letters: advocating such a combined headquarters for city and county government. . The letters were signed by Rev. Howard J. Baumgartel, executive secretary of the Church Federation of Indianapolis;: Rev. G. Lavon Fisher, pastor of Centenary Christian Church; William H. Plymate, Indianapolis Life 1Insurance Co., and Paul G. Griffith, Stokely Foods, Inc.
