PETERSBURG, Fla.—The World Champion New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, two bitter American League rivals who had “National League” troubles yesterday, begin their 1952 competition today in an exhibition game. Country Slaughter’s line single to right off Art Schallock with the bases loaded in the eighth inning gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-to;1 exhibition triumph over the Yankees. The Cardinals got only four hits, two off Schallock and two off Ed Lopat. Yankee Pitcher Frank Shea, who is trying a comeback, held the National Leaguers hitless and runless for *hree innings.
At Sarasota, the Philadelphia Phillies included a six-run eighth in their 13 to 4 victory over the Red Sox. The Phillies collected Rookie Harley Hisner and Walt 14 hits off Ray Scarborough, Masterson. Boston got to Howie Fox for five hits and three runs in the first three innings but got only two hits off Emory (Bubba) Church and Jim Konstanty the rest of the way.
