~ Church News ‘A Reverent City On Good Friday’
By EMMA RIVERS MILNER Times Church Editor
PERHAPS you will agree that the unusual observance of Good Friday in Indianapolis did not “just happen.”
If there is any doubt in your mind that it is unusual, i
visit another city at that time and make a comparison.
Thousands crowd our churches until often not even standing room {is left. And more thou- | “eTVices. sands follow the Catholic “Way of the Cross” Devotions in the War. Memorial Plaza. About 32 Protestants and Catholics, mostly laymen, deserve credit for plan-
Many of the firms display posters announcing the Good Friday worship. Boy Scouts and Hi-Y members will deliver the posters this season.

three times a year to discuss ar-|
rangements. The simple meals] are served without fanfare in the] YMCA. And not one bit. of bickering do you hear, then, about a prospective ambassador to the Vatican, federal aid to parochial schools and other controversial issues. I've been an invited guest on such an occasion and I noted the genial atmosphere. Rotates Leadership “We think it is important to find the things we have in common rather than the ones on which we disagree,” Patrick Fisher, current chairman, explained. Mr. Fisher is a Catholic. Last year, the chairman was a Protestant. Thus the committee rotates its leadership. Culver Miller, a charter member, recalls that the committee came into existence 22 years ago. Mr. Miller says the late Dr. Ernest Evans saw a need and promoted the organization of it. Dr. Evans preceded Dr. Howard J. Baumgartel as Church Federa-
tion executive secretary. He is|
committee secretary-treasurer. Other charter members named by Mr. Miller included: Wallace O. Lee, also an early chairman; A. B. Cornelius, a chairman, now
of Chicago; Oliver Burgess, now
of Shelbyville, Ind.; Smith Gray, who lives in California; the Rev. Fr. Ambrose Sullivan, Virgil Brock, and Dr. Jean S. Milner. Charter members who have died are: Marshall Lupton, John Lempke, Dr. J. Ambrose Dunkel, the Rev. Fr. Timothy Tieman, the Rev. H. L. Herod and Dr. H. Benting. Story Recalled Arthur Pratt, who has belonged to the committee for about 20 years, says many persons in Indianapolis hardly gave a thought to Good Friday before the committee began its work. Now, the story of the Saviour’s Crucifixion is recalled on all sides and theaters as well as churches, offer settings for Good Friday | worship. Among the services that have, attracted immense numbers are those held for three hours—noon! to 3 p. m., when Jesus hung on the Ccross—in Christ Episcopal Church on the Circle and St. John’s Catholic Church. Both are downtown. Has Wide Experience Mr. Pratt not only serves on the Interdenominational Commit-
tee but for 32 years has handled| RE
the practical matters connected with the Christ Church hoonday Lenten meetings. Drop down to the Circle any evening in Holy Week and you will see windows in the Power & Light Co. building illuminated to form three crosses. These will remind you of the crosses of Jesus and the two thieves. Mr. Lee and Roy Badollett of the Power & Light Co. are re-
sponsible for having the windows |.
