According to a survey prepared by Claude Hodson, executive secretary of the Indiana County Commissioners Association, the state gas tax fund paid an average of $285.55 a mile for the repair and maintenance of county roads. The one other source of revenue for local roads is federal aid. However, counties must match the’ federal government's funds on all such projects, which they are either hesitant or unable to do. For example, if it would cost $100,000 to resurface a county road, the federal government would be willing to: pay $50,000 providing the county paid the remaining $50,000.

Lack of this matching money and the lack of engineering .personnel has handicapped counties in their use of government funds. Only 30 per cent of the counties have used about 20 per cent of available federal aid since 1947, according to George Goodwin, state highway engineey. Marion County, which had the largest number of auto registrations—217,451—received $1.2 millon from the state gas fund, or an average of $837 per road mile. Marion County has 1343 miles of road. On the other hand, Brown County, with 2399 vehicles and 600 miles of road, got $220 revenue per mile, Other counties surrounding Indianapolis received:

Catholic Pledges Pass $2.5 Million
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis announced today that their high school fund campaign already reports gifts of more than $2.5 million dollars.
The sum exceeds the goal of $1.5 by more than a million dollars. And an even greater total, perhaps $3 million, is expected when final returns come in. Also, the archdiocese quoted the Most Rev. Paul C. Schulte,! archbishop, as giving consent to his priests to say midnight masses on the Eve of Easter,
