Cost of New Bridges Set At $665,000

Replacement of 10 “worst”! Marion County bridges will cost $665,000, County Commissioners estimated today. But lack of funds will prevent any new bridge construction this year, they said.

« Commissioner DF, Silver suggested a five-cent inverease in property taxes as the frat step in providing needed unds. He estimated the levy,

would bring in between $300,000

and $400,000 a year.

+ “The County Council should set

up a separate fund for the main-|

tenance and construction of

bridges,” Dr. Silver said. “Under | this plan the additional property| tax would be earmarked’ for! bridges alone.”

The Commissioner said anot suggestion is floating a bond is over a 10 to 20 year period to pay for the bridges. Ten worst bridges and the cost of replacement are: ? McGregor Rd. over Buck Creek; (Franklin Twp.), $85,000. Fall Creek Rd. over Mud Creek’ (Lawrence Twp.), $55,000. W. 56th St. Creek (Pike Twp.), $250,000. Southpprt Rd. over Little Buck] Creek (Perry Twp), $50,000. 8. Emerson Ave. over Bean Creek (Warren Twp.), $30,000. 8. Emerson Ave. over Lick Creek (Warren Twp.), $35,000. W. 52d St. over Indianapolis] Water Co. canal (Washington' Twp.), $60,000. W. 30th St. over Little Eagle, Creek (Wayne Township), $60,00.

W. 30th St. over ditch (Wayne) Township), $30,000. Marion - Hancock County Line,

Rd. over Steele Ditch (Lawrence;

Township), $10,000. “ In January, County Surveyor Paul R. Brown warned that new « residential areas would be cut off

if some of the bridges should]

become impassable due to bad weather or damage.

Massages Heart With Bare Hands,

Saves Woman

PITTSBURGH, Mar. Mrs. Anna Buza, 57, Homestead, Pa., was in fair condition in Mercy Hospital yesterday after a ~ surgeon massaged her heart back into. operation with his bare hands. Her heart stopped beating for 10 minutes as she lay on an op-| erating table. The emergency occurred Sat-| urday as surgeons prepared Mrs.

Buza for an abdominal operation. ‘Anesthetists began putting the

and began massaging the limp heart. ‘A few minutes later, the heart began to quiver, he said. After 10 minutes, Mrs. Buza's heart started to beat again. Dr. Erickson said he had never ‘performed the operation before. He said he had “just read about it being done” in similar cases.
