Valencia Oranges “In Increased Supply ‘Due to Hit Market

N ALL-ROUND good buy this week will be Valencia oranges, coming on the market in increased supply and due to continue so the next couple of months, are excellent for preserves and sauces as well as for juice,

Good with waffles or griddle cakes or ah¥ other food which

you might serve a sirup with is un orange sauce. Simple to make, it requires

one tablespoon cornstarch, onehalf cup. sugar and one-fourth teaspoon salt to each cup orange juice and two teaspoons grated rind with a few orange sections. Bring to a boll, stirring constantly. To use oranges for sandwiches while they are plentiful, thin cream cheese or peanut butter with orange juice and a bit of the rind, Spread on brown bread for variety, Ta serve oranges in a different fashion for breakfast, slice bananas in the juice. ORANGE FILLING 5 e. sugar 3 thsps. cornstarch Vi- tsp. salt 114 c. orange juice 1 egg yolk, slightly beaten 1 thsp. butter or margarine

Combine sugar, cornstarch and salt In top of double boiler. Blend in orange juice; mix thoroughly. Cook over direct heat and stir constantly until mixture - is thickened. Place over boiling water; cook 10 minutes longer. Stir small amount of orange mixture into the egg yolk. Return to mixture in double boiler, Cook, stirring constantly, three minutes longer. Add butter, remove from heat and cool.

Mrs. Suzanne Silvercruys Stevenson, North Wind-

ham, Conn, founder and national president of the organization, made her public debut quite by accident. Daughter of the late Baron 8Silvercruys, Belgium's Supreme Court president, she was a child refugee of World War I. While in school in Philadelphia she attended a dinner of Newspaper Editors Assoclation of the U. 8. When Secretary of War Newton Baker was unable to fill his engagement as speaker, she substituted. Her story of horror and destruction in her native land was so inspiring it was carried by newspapers from coast to coast. She toured the country for the Belgian government and raised millions for Belgian relief, then returned to the U. 8. after the war, bhecamie an

Gingerbread Proves Its

Popularity OT ginger-bread is a popular item. To make

it convenient to serve fre- ~

quently, prepare a mix. For enough ror four bakings in an eight-by-10 inch pan combine eight cups sifted all-pur-pose flour, two cups sugar, twoand one-half teaspoons soda, four teaspoons salt, two, tablespoons baking powder, three tablespoons ginger, three tablespoons cinnamon, one tablespoon cloves, one and one-half cups shortening. . Sift the dry ingredients together twice. Cut in the fat until thé mix has the consistency of coarse meal. Then place the mix in tightly covered jars or cans, label and store in a cool place. Use in the following recipe. For one cake to make in a pan eight by 10 by two inches, ingredients are: Three cups of gingerbread mix, three-fourth sup molasses, one egg, well beaten and three-fourth cup boiling water. Put mix in a bowl. ‘Add molasses to the egg. Beat with rotary beater until wel mixed. Add the boiling. water. Pour the egg mixture into the bowl containing the dry mix and beat well. Pour the batter into a greased pan, - Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees ¥.) for
