"THERE still seems to be some confusion about the meaning of North's second bid in today’s deal—the

raise of partner's one bid in a major suit to four. The rexplanation depends on the answer to the question: “Who opened the bidding?” For example, if your partner opens with one spade, next hand passes, and you bid four spades, your partner has no right to figure you for a strong hand. This bid_ usually made principally on distributional values.

However, when you yourself open the bidding with, say, one

heart, partner - responds one spade, and you ‘raise him to four spades, you are making

just-about the biggest bid in the

book.

West was down to the king-jack of diamonds and the ten of spades. Dummy's last cards were the six of spades and the, ur of diamonds.
