FRIDAY, FEB. 29, 1952 : : ‘Freeze on Television | ~ Stations to Be Lifted
By United Press DENVER, Feb, 29--The nationwide freeze on new-television stations set in’ 1948 will be lifted Mar, 25, Sen. Ed C. Johnson of Colorado said today. ‘The Rocky Mountain News, a Scripps Howard newspaper, quoted the Senator as announcing the date after ‘he held a conference with Paul Walker, the new Federal Communications Commission chairman, in Washington: As for his TV-less home state, Sen. Johnson said he doubted if more than. one station will be available in time for this year’s World Series. At present, there are no stations in Colorado.® Sen, Johnson said the freeze on television was clamped on by the FCC Sept. 30, 1948, to give it time to explore and correct difficulties arising from interference due to the stratospheric bending of waves intp other TV stations. “In view of the limited number of channels available in the very high frequency band,” Sens Johnson sald, “the -commission decided also to re-examine the possibility of opening up the ultra high frequency band.” These. problems have been responsible for the long-lasting freeze order, he said. The Senator said a 60 to 90-day waiting period will be set after the Mar. 25 date in order to permit interested parties fo file applications or amend their old applications. It may take the “more than a year” all the applicants, he said. “Should there be not more than one applicant for each channel” he added, “there should not be too much difficulty. in obtaining a license from the commission within a reasonable period of time.”
