Sen. Russell Choice of Southern Democrats

Way Open For Possible Party Bolt

By United Press WaT Feb. 29-— Southern Democrats rallied today around the presidential ban-

ner of Sen. Richard. B. Russell and kept the door open for a possible withdrawal from the Democratic Party. In Washington, and in state capitals throughout the South, anti-Truman Democratic leaders enthusiastically pledged their support to the veteran Georgia

Senator who announced his candidacy yesterday. Sen.” Russell himself left the vay opensfor a Southern revolt like that which led to formation of the ‘States Rights Party in 1048. He did not say he would lead such a third party—but he gracefully refrained. from saying he would not.

Ducks Truman Question

Pressed to say whether he would support President Truman if the Pre ident finally decidgs to rin, Sen. Russell declined to- answer on the grounds that Mr. Truman is not yet a candidate and the party platform is not written. His evasive answer was interpreted as a bargaining maneuver to keep pressure. on the Demoeratic convention to come forward with a candidate and a platform acceptable to the South. Sen. Russell, who got 263 Southern ballots for the 1948 Democratic nomination without announcing his candidacy, is sure to be an important power when the convention ballots are counted in July. President Truman gave‘ no clues on his own intentions at a news conference yesterday. He stirred up speculation, however, by saying that Illinois Governor Adlai E. Stevenson is a very able man and one of the best governors Illinois ever had.
