Gy EDDIE ASH * Double Swoon -Night at Fieldhouse.
IT'S A genuine, Bob thrill for any team to win the opening game—particularly when the lid-lifter is close—in a 16-team state ‘high school sectional basketball tournament. Indianapolis’ Manual, one of the Hoosier state's pioneers in the round ball sport, enjoyed that glorious feeling at Butler Fieldhouse last night. The fact that Manual had to come from behind to edge Warren Central by only a couple of breaths and that Broad Ripple was given a rousing battle right down to the wire by Washington, upheld the reputation of, the Indianapolis sectional as one of the most frenzied in the state. Two near deadheats on opening night: is said to have set a new local sectional record for swooning on the part of the bobby soxers in the cheering sections . . . But it was well worth it . . . Even many of the adult spectators were limp and barely able to whisper at the end of each spinetingling contest. It's extra pleasant to win on opening night in a 16teamer . . . Gives the winning lads plenty of time to sit around, rest and watch the other teams sweat it out before their call to action comes for a second time.

» ” n n » n Manual is this department's alma mater . .-. No sectionals no tournaments in the early days . Only two high schools in Indianapolis then, Shortridge and ‘Manual They played basketball, but football was the BIG game with the annual battle between the- hot rivals being a city-wide Thanksgiving Day feature . . . Baseball was second in importance, followed by track, with basketball last.
» » n SPORTS FANS hadn't yet worked up to basketball in the way-back-when days, since it was new to the pupils as well as the adults . . . But the advantage of height in the new sport was recognized by the coaches right off the bat. We recall the coach lost no time appealing to Manual's baseball pitcher, Jack Bohnstadt, to come out for basketball . . . Jack was a skyscraper, stretching up to about 6:10... Nowadays some entire teams are made of aerial | ladders, but Manual's Bohnstadt probably was the first in this area.
» - ~ » » » Wilfred J. Ullrich of Aurora calls our attention to another twist on state basketball tournament membership team names . . . Says the Aurora (dawn) sectional shouldn't be dull with both Bright and Rising Sun in it . . . Patriot is in that sectional, too, meeting Aurora, but after sun y set, not at dawn . . . Vevay plays Rising Sun after:sun down tomorrow.
» » » SULPHUR ‘SPRINGS was paired with Mooreland this afternoon in the state high school basketball sectional tourney at New Castle . . . Sulphur Springs has an Indianapolis connection . . . Walter O'Brien, Buckshot's brother, is the coach, and like the pro Olympians’ O’Brien, Walter played the game at Indianapolis’ Washington High and Butler U. . Only. 20 boys are enrolled at Sulphur Springs and all play basketball. The ace is Rex Alspaugh, forward, who scored 388 points in 20 games . . . Since Coach O’Brien took over (the last 12 games), Alspaugh tallied 323 points, an average close to 27 a game . . . Looks as though Walter must have fed some Brckshot to his Rex.
Ronald Esarey, Ball State Teachers College reshman, used to play basketball on the Springfield Township High School team in the Connersville sectional . . . Writing from Muncie, young Esarey says Springfield goose-egged Fairview in a ‘sectional game some years before his high school days . . . He's righto . . . It was in 1938 and the score was 51 to 0 . . . But research reveals a shutout occurred in a state sectional tourney seven years before Springfield hung it on Fairview . . In 1931, ot Seymour, North Vernon sent Vernon through the scoreless wringer, 4 to 0.

vanquished county foe, Lawrence.
[Central, in the first game at 7 p. m. and the Spartans take on dark-horse Decatur Central in
the second fracas.
And, if last night's opening session produced some unexpected explosives, the detonation of those two uproarious games were touched off by kids whose scoring powder all season couldn't have blown up an empty Dixie cup.
Manual's .49 to 47 prolonged stalling thriller over Warren Central and Broad Ripple’s finalsecond 49-48 upset over Washington gave the near-capacity crowd of 14.500 onlookers a pair of soulstirring hair-ralsers,
~ ~ ~
BOTH WINNERS had to come from behind, but, somewhere durIng the touch-and-go battling, it was the little-heralded boys, and not the big shots, who got their names in the big type today— the real heroes.
Ben Davis and Sacred Heart take heed: Broad Ripple’'s redhead sophomore, Wally Cox, who had averaged only 3.2 points in 13 games this season, blasted 12 points on six field goals. He cracked three consecutive short one-handers on the sides in the final quarter to help to kill off Washington, just before Ted Bosler's last second layup underneath at the final gun.
Washington had held a seven{point lead, 43 to 36, with five min{utes to go and was moving strong in its uphill climb all game after a miserable one-for-16 first quar- - ter.
