Here’ s Your Times Carrier:
‘Copters Can Solve Problem
Of Airports

Trial of Reds Second Time
LOS ANGELES, Feb, 28 (UP) | ~The flu bug that has plagued {Los Angeles for the past three | weeks hit the ‘conspiracy trial lof 185 California Communis}s| again yesterday, forcing the second recess in the four weeks it has been underway. Defense Attorney A. L. Wirin {was stricken this time. © In the {first week of the trial Federal {Judge William C. Mathes declared

|Alex Schuliman won a bout with influenza, Judge Mathes declared the trial in recess after reading la letter from Mr, Wirin declaring he is confined to his home with flu, As the session opened yesterday morning, Judge Mathes had admonished both the government and defense attorneys that the “tempo of the trial is far too slow” and that because of too

landed at airports far distant] from New York. Trains: and busses then would offer the only alternative to New York-bound passengers. L.arge helicopters,| however, could pick them up and transport them by straight airline to the city at 100 to 150 miles per hour.
Must Find Solution
The situation at New York is bound to be repeated in other localities where major airports
are located near residential and |
business areas. The airlines, it is pointed out, cannot continually reduce the number of flights at various airports, without wrecking future commercial airline growth. Neither can they afford to have any repetitions of the New Jersey tragedies, Some means, therefore, must be found to keep city-to-city airline serv. ice, with speed and comfort, growing steadily. Helicopters appear to be the best answer. For instance, a New York-bound plane landing at Philadelphia could transfer passengers to one or two large helicopters. Within an hour they could be landed close-in to New York City, arriving in mid-city by the time they usually would arrive by airline bus from LaGuardia. The helicopter industry already has the vehicles to serve the airlines. In a matter of months, at the most, if the military service could spare a percentage of production, many airports could be served.
Many Types in Production
A chart just prepared by the
Helicopter Council shows that eight helicopter manufacturers now are producing many types. They include Bell, Doman, Hiller, Hughes, Kaman, McDonnell, Piasecki and Sikorsky. Bell has a 10-passenger helicopter, the commercial version of which {s-the Bell-48, Piasecki has two 18-pas-seriger, one 22-passenger and one 42-passenger models of rotary wing aircraft, all being produced for the military services but with no commercial designation as yet. Sikorsky has a 10 to 12-passenger helicopter, commercially designated as the 8-55. Doman has a two to six passenger craft known commercially as the LZ-5 and an eight passenger model known as the LZ-4. Horsepower in these helicopters ranges from 400 to 1650 horsepower. The helicopter came ‘into Its own through its great performance in Korea. Air Force, the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard now use many of them, They
