At Murat Show |
By Henry Butler Two actresses carry most of the show in “The “Member of the Wedding,” which épened last night at the Murat. They are the incomparable Ethel Waters, as wige and weary Berenice Sadie Brown, and Betty Lou Holland, as
2 Carry Burden |
“THAT ONE!"
Frankie Addams, the tempestuous 13-year-old- girl who wants to join _ her brother and sister-in-law on their wedding trip. Both of them make clear in different ways a major theme of the play. That thame is the pervasive and invincible loneliness of the. human “individual. For Frankie it 1s a bitter lesson fhat the bride and greom can't understand her wish to be a member of their wedding. And though Berenice offers the Child Tove and sym= athy, Frankie's emotional torment starts Berenice musing sadly on the tragedies in her own life. Setting in Shabby Home The unfolding of these psychological patterns takes place in Lester Polakov’'s admirable setting representing the kitchen and back yard of a shabby old smalltown Georgia house. A large part of the important dialog is between Berenice and Frankie with 6-year-old John Henry West, Frankie's cousin, superbly done by young Robert Mariotti, as observer, occasional commentator and frequent, clown, Not having seen the Broadway cast, I cannot draw any comparisons between Miss ‘Holland and the original Julie Harris, who created the Frankie role. With her crew-cut red hair, tomboy intensity and often raucous voice, Miss Holland last night had some spectators puzzled at first. : But with the Increasing interchange of thoughts between Bere-
nice and Frankie, both the older
and the younger actress gained more depth. As Miss Waters, with her splendid feeling for timing and her great command of tones of voice, spoke the lines full of wisdom and insight, Miss Holland started conveying very well the sensitivity and real ability Frankie is supposed to have under the tomboy surface. At the end of the play, there fs hope for Frankie, who has acquired a new girl friend and a new boy friend. - Berenice sadly remarks she no longer understands the child, though only a few months have passed since their long, heart-to-heart talks.

Now motherless Frankie will have no further intense need for (3 Berenice. A Lonely Woman
And after recounting the disasters that have befallen some subordinate characters, white and Negro, the play closes with Berenice sitting alone for the last. time in - the kitchen of the Addams’ now vacated house. The implication is that nothing is cerfain but change and tonet= ness. If that kind of theme sofinds gloomy, it "is softened a good bit during the play by the! warm human-kindness Miss® Wa-| ters manages to radiate. Her per-| formance is. altogether magnifi-| cent. And. I think Miss Holland is. a very close second in merit. Curiously eriough, Miss Holland, born in New York of Southern| parents, it says in the program| who's who, has a New York ac-! cent almost as pronounced as Shirley Booth's. I think it shows both great restraint and great intelligence on ° director Harold Clurman’s part fo leave that accent untampered with, instead of trying to ptoduce a phony Georgia
