Hoosier Eclipse, 760 Champs at Post 2 YOU DON'T have to travel to far-off Khartoum, “+ Sudan, to gaze upon an eclipse; you'll see one of your’ & own right here in Indiana, beginning tonight... as the rest of the world is blotted out by the great Hoosier shadow, the beginning of the annual state high school basketball -tournament. Upsy daisy, the ball goes up, the ball comes down. ... And they're off again in a four-week binge on the hardwood, the length and breadth of the state. . .. Every team starts from scratch in Indiana's round ball carnival .~. , the little and the huge. . .. And like baseball clubs in spring training, it's a “new season.’

. . . Every quintet is a champ | at post time, 760 champs as of today.

The rest of the universe now will stop moving insofar |

as Hoosiers are concerned, until the 64 sectionals are disposed of at the week-end. There'll be action in only four ‘district meets tonight, . Blufffon, Decatur, South Bend and Wabash. . , . The big _ fireworks will be ignited tomorrow night, and if you want to see blood pressure kicked up, step into Butler Fieldhouse and watch the colossal Indianapolis sectional blow off the lid. In the four sectionals seeing action tonight, six games will + be played in all .. . Which means laryngitis will join the flu . - bug epidemic in Hoosierland when the exhausted rooters crawl out of the hay tomorrow morning . . . But the winning rooters will laugh it off and go into vocal training for the next games their heroes are to appear in ... But the losing rooters will almost die , . . Don’t care if they do, we've heard some say in + past years when their idols were eliminated. . But there'll be another year , . . There always is, £ only it's a long wait for the teenagers whose teams wind | up on the short side of the score right off the bat.

Vid » - tJ ~ » § MIKE McNALLY, Cleveland's farm system director, has announced a new departure in mass transportation of + rookie ball players to training camp . . . First major + league club to do it, says Mike. . . . He will fly 48 players : mostly first-year little minor league hopefuls, from Cleve- * land to Indianville, hard by Daytona Beach, Fla. . .° That's where the Indianapolis Indians also are to pitch camp. : These first- -yeat lads in McNally's custody will check “ In from the sky on Mar. 18, six days after the Hoosier contingent reports . . . The Hoosier Indians will travel to camp individually, in cars, busses or trains , . . , McNally's young army of rookies: will speed to camp in . one huge chartered plane and make it about five hours from Cleveland, arriving at Daytona Beach at night +++ Forty-eight are a lot of eggs in one basket. Kid Cupid has been called upoh to lend a hand in the base-

=» ball spring training business . . . And an old hand is Kid Cupid, a long out of the rookie class . .. In the “Female Help Wanted” » columns of recent editions of a St, Petersburg, Fla., newspaper

this advertisement, inserted by a hotel, appeared: “Waitresses, experienced, to serve New York Yankee baseball club. Some are married and some are not” . .. Another hotel there, housing the St. Louis Cardinals, inserted a similar ad . . . Since the Florida moon is said to be closely linked with romance the dining room help problem in sunny St. Pete probably is soived right * now.

- » ” » - ” . § ; AL ROSEN, t he Cleveland Indians’ third sacker, .. blames golf for his 1951 batting slump. . . . Said playing * the links sport got him into the habit of ‘“upper-.-cutting” while batting and hurt his baseball swing. . Anyway, he's quit playing golf. . . . If Rosen doesn’ t i { up” his average this year he'll have to think up a new one. : & Rosen says: Sammy Snead, the famous golfer, told . him that ball players should not play golf. . Says golfer Snead remarked: “You don't see me swinging a baseball bat.” : Rosen’s 1951 record with the stick wasn’t too bad . , . It's

WRAY ab

true his over-all hitting average dropped off 22 points from his. 4

1950 mark, .287 to .265, but he managed to belt 24 homers and bat in 102 runs . . . Pretty fair for a third sacker . . . Babe Ruth played golf and he was quite a hitter; remember?

Sports Editor, The Times: Just how crooked can the professional boxing game be? After the fight between Johnny Bratton and Vie -Cardell last Wednesday, I was shocked.

Just how ignorant do they think the public is? Was

there so much money involved to prevent the decision

from going to the rightful victor? If that was an example _

of a just decision, please do not show such examples on IV. - _, 1 Many children watch sports events with their hearts, and after being taught true sportsmanship, that by doing right and fighting hard always makes a fighter a winner, what can we as parents tell them after such a display? That we are liars? Children arédnot so dumb they cannot see that all it takes is to get in with the right crowd, and then it is impossible to lose, and that sportsmanship does not count. : So I say if .we cannot clean up the professional boxing game, take it away from the air. Let's have cartoons or something less destructive to our teachings at home. The. public cannot stomach such decisions as this one . that was made between Bratton and Cardell. Robert Mahrling, 2169 N.
