WHICH 1S WHICH?—Tha

"just in case you're wondering. He's the star of the “Dial Dave Garroway" show Monday through Friday at 10:45 a, m. on WIRE.

By KATHLEEN

AMID THE SOAP operas and quiz programs cluttering the airways every morning, is one gem of a 15-minute show I could gladly see expanded to a half hour. show is “Dial Dave Garroway,” heard each morning Monday

through Friday at 10:45 a. 'm. on]

WIRE. Garroway has a way about him .- that does something for my nervous system. His oblique approach to the minor irritations of life reduces them to their proper status, as he rambles his way along.

His formula for a nice, quiet, relaxing 15 minutes each morning is to have musie by Skitch Henderson and his orchestra, a few songs by Connie Russell and Jack Haskell, and jokes and chatter by himself,

Garroway’s humor can't be sald|tions, but if NBC succeeds with

‘to be exactly funny—but it's de-

“ livered in such an easy mannericouldn’t pick up the relay and

and with. such expectancy, you have to chuckle. | Garroway particularly likes parrot jokes: On a recent broad-!, cast he told a story about a man who couldn't resist auctions. One day he found himself coming out of an auction with a parrot and saying out loud to himself, “Nbw, I wonder what I bought this stupid bird for?”. And the parrot suddenly answered, “Stupid? Who's stupid, Who do you think was bidding against you?” Even banks have their human side, according to Garroway. He © knew a man who received a check from his bank for one cent in|’ ‘payment of an error they had made in his accounts. The man. took the check to the bank, indorsed it, and slipped it through the teller’s window. The teller picked it up, looked at both sides, and sald, “How would you like this money, sir, heads or tails?” See what'I mean? I like Dave Garroway—because he ‘doesn’t go off the deep end to be funny—he just lets it come naturally. I understand his new TV program “Today” isn't too good, though. Guess it's a good thing we don't - receive it here,

P ”n » » y BECAUSE of the terrific response we received ‘on last

week’s letter-writing contest— we're going to continue it and give all our readers a chance to

air their views on lots of other n the great love story, “A Letter

TV subjects. The new subject for-you letter writers is this: WHat do you think of Ed Sulllvan—master of ceremonies on the “Toast of the Town’ show Sundays at 7 p. m. on Channel 62 "This is your chance to relieve your minds—so don’t hesitate to pen those letters. There will again be a five dollar prize for the best letter. Winners will be

announced in The Sunday Times.

INFORMATION on what spectators can expect at this year's Sports Show at the State FairGrounds here Mar. 1'to 9, will be| the highlight of the “Sports Cara-| van" this evening at 5:30 on! Channel 6. Fred Smith will have John Ma-| thews, nianager - of this year's show, as guest. Also interviewed will be a representative of the Indianapolis Indians, which will be making its first appearance at the Sports Show this year. The Indians, incidentally, go into_spring training Mar. 13, and, prospects for the local baseball club in the coming American Association race will also receive ‘an airing. » » ” JOE E. x o n 5 TV'ERS here may get a chance to see the coronation of Queen | Elizabeth in March if NBC plans! materialize, The network ‘hopes to make history with a telecast of the ceremony, if possible. It's planning to use six aircraft, each 450 miles apart, to relay the video beams across the Atlantic. Of course, local viewing would depend upon one of our two sta-
