‘The Ledigs Revamp

Old House

BY JEAN SPICKLEMIRE

Times Homes Editor HEIR HOME is the Dr, Robert Ledigs’ hobby. After spending nine years in the country away from drug stores, street lights and trolley © buses, they're thrilled to be city living again. But they didn't move into a sleek town apartment. Instead they remodeled a two-story 50-year-old house at 3346 N. Pennsylvania St. The changeover. took five months, lots of effort. “Two sliding doors were wacked out of parlor and living room and complete walls subsituted. The direction of the stairway also was changed so tiie upper part of the house could be made into a private apartment. In the den a bookcase (shown) fills up a former doorway.

Finally the bottom floor of -

the house was ready for decoration. Only previous plans the couple had made was the flowered draperies to covér one solid wall of the living room, furniture and furnishings from . the former house. Basic idea for the room schemes was the Chinese collection Robert and Maggie Ledig had begun years ago. Like Topsy, Mrs. Ledig admits, .it just grew... w ~ ” NOW, IT FITS. perfectly into the tall-ceilinged rooms. The parlor for ekample, has flame walls, gray ceiling. This basic red and gray theme carries on throughout the house, Two other colors repeated often are the black and turquoise which cover the sofa bed. The down pillow, made in one piece, provides a comfortable backrest, comes off easily when the sofa converts into a bed. A black lacquer break-front and Chinese upholstered sectional chairs are other main furniture pieces here. Oriental rugs; porcelain wall pockets, seldom seen in the Far East design, and objets d'art keep the room keyed to the overall pattern. Decorating here will . help other home remodelers. The gray of the walls continues on to the built-in, old-fashioned mantelpiece. The latter is used as a background for the vivid colors of Chinese bric-a-brac. It's a good way to masque dowdy features of a room, turn them into useful ones.

» ” ” IN THE ADJOINING living room there are gray walls, cocoa brown carpeting. Punctuating this scene are two oversized purple chairs, red Chippendale —¢hina cabinet and extra long green velvet sofa. Blond case pieces in this room mix with Chinese lacquered ones. Since the Ledigs do much buffet entertaining, it’s necessary that they have a great deal of seating space. The two sitting rooms turn this trick. Pine paneling lines a casual room adjoining the kitchen which also may be used for entertaining. Furnished with blond woods and Chinese peel, it will double for a bedroom, too. The color scheme of the parlor is reversed in the kitchen, Here are gray walls and red ceiling. The refrigerator is painted the same shade as the walls, is built in a storage wall. Liquid sandpaper was used to take off the enamel, then the wall paint applied.

TWO SHADES “ot gray M- . noleum” face the floor, and the darker, elephant gray ‘is repeated In the cafe curtains at the windows. Stripes of turquoise and red brighten the gray. There's no wasted space any-

CULINARY CORNER—Robert and Margaret Ledig have coffee in their gray, black and red kitchen.

where. To cover an exposed flue, a closet was built. It houses crystal, cleaning tools.

The Ledigs have given every room a title. The bath is the Rose Room -— because of the door knob of that shade to open it. The color, carried out in the interior, repeats in the shower and window curtains and in wallpaper cut outs over the wall.

A switch from blue to gold revivified the master bedroom shown. A north room, the blue made it cold, Gold walls and ceiling were substituted along with matching rugs. Yellow drapes dotted with black flowers, black lacquer beds and storage pieces strengthen the room. n ~ ”

FORMERLY THE dining room, the Ledigs changed an old china closet into a clothes closet for shirts and short things.

Quilted green spreads and chair cover contribute to the striking color combination as well as Chinese prints displayed in modern frames. In a kitchen hall between that room and the living room is a group of evolutionary-dance pictures from an old French magazine. They're above an old-fashioned wash stand and decanter set. Just as soon as it's possible, the Ledigs will swab the outside of the house with dark green; flatterer to the interior color scheme. -
