WHEN THE CURTAIN goes up on the world seriegliasout of Jensen Recreation while
of bowling—the 1952 American Bowling Congress tourney at Milwaukee on Mar. 22—the inaugural session will be one of the most colorful in recent years.
Ted Siener, executive director for the ABC in this area, was on the partyline to Charlie Treuter, ABC : tournament di- #2 rector, at Mil waukee Friday and picked up | some interest ing data on the forthcoming classic. Mayor Frank P. Zeidler of Milwaukee has already issued a p r oclamation, designating the week of Mar.’ 17-22 jas ‘American Bowling Congress Week.” ” There is also a possibility Gov. Kohler of Wisconsin will be in the gallery of the spacious Milwaukee Arena when the first ball is rolled. He has been invited and has assured ABC officials that he will make every effort to attend. Last year a unique presentation was added at St. Paul with the crowning of “Joe Bowler.” Douglas Baldwin, director of the Minnesota State Fair, cast aside the tradition of having a prominent citizen roll the first ball. He nominated a “Joe Bowler” who was selected from the 200 bowlers awaiting action in the first night's session. Dean Larsen of St. Paul was the name pulled out of a hat and he was honored as “Joe Bowler” during the tourney. Larsen received an attractive crown befitting the title. ? Two bands—the Blatz American Legion Post and Miller American Legion Post—will play the introductory music and a 36-piece color guard will precede .the competition. Four newsreel cameras will grind away to record the ceremony which will later be shown in movie houses throughout the country. . A special stage has been constructed behind the alley pits where guest dignitaries and personalities wili-be introduced. Tom#Canelli, president, from Toledo, and George Obenhaver, president-elect from Buffalo, will be in attendance. Treuter said a master of

* ceremonies has not yet been
selected but the ABC is dickering for a nationally-known personality. The Milwaukee Arena, which fs the city’s newest sport site, will be revamped. Treuter announced that construction of 40 alleys will begin on Mar, 3. The Arena has been the home of many major boxing matches, basketball games, and ice shows in recent months and is now to Milwaukee what Madison Square Garden is to New York. : There were 3400 fans in the Paul Auditorium for last year's grand opening. Treuter anticipates even a greater number for this year's spectacle—the 49th in ABC history. Lest we forget, Siener has been active in ABC competition since 1935. Since that year he has missed only one’ tourney—the 1937 meet at. New York. Ted's biggest production in ABC tournaments came in 1938 when he bowled at Chicago. $ 5 Siener posted a 668 actual series and finished in .a threeway tie for 23d place. Ted will never forget the day . .. it was one for double celebration. It wag his wife's birthday. That $123.50 he picked up in prizes couldn't have arrived at a more opportune moment.
» » » MRS, FRANCES DEER, secretary of the Indianapolis Women’s. Bowling Association, announced that four recommendations have been okayed for examination by the IWBA board of directors at the annual meeting on Mar. 7 in the Sky Room at the Claypool Hotel. The proposals which were screened during a board meeting Wednesday at the Fox-Hunt, include: (A) Informing each bowler by direct notice of the annual meetings: E (B) To increase the women’s city tournament handicap to
75 per cent ,.. . leaving 25 per
