Folks in ‘Minneapolis’ Taught Jimmy Broadway Is Not America

NOTE: T h e sixth installment of the life of one of the country's great

“When | was getting forty a week | could have ate cast-iron sausages. Now [I'm drawin’ down two thousand and it looks like healthy people shouldn't get in the money.” —Mr. James Durante’s comment on his digestive disorders caused by high living. By GENE FOWLER JIMMY DURANTE, Lou Clayton and Eddie Jackson said goodby to New York night clubs on Memorial Day, 1928, They played vaudeville engagements at the Palace, Newark and then they signed with Keith-Albee for a Midwest tour, the first appearance of the trio outside New York. : . Jackson roomed with Durante on the: tour. One night, in the

Bismarck Hotel in Chicago, Durante called out, “Eddie.”

Eddie turned on: the lights.

© Jim was sitting up in bed. “Yes,

Jim, what is it?" “Eddie, you know somethin’? We're gettin’ fifty-five hundred a week here. A king's ransom. Do you think we're worth that kind of money?” = »

«] GUESS we are or they wouldn't pay it, Jimmy.” “That's a lotta money, Eddie. Where do we come off gettin’ it? I just don’t think nobody's really worth that kinda dough. " “Well, Jim,” said Eddie, “we pack the theaters.” “1 still can't believe it, Eddie. Me and you, workin’ back in the old days, were just makin’ a living. And now look. Headlinin’ theaters. New York and Chicago talkin’ about us. I don’t understand that much money yd If Jimmy wondered if the ag was worth $5500 a week, he would soon find out. At the end of their successful Milwaukee engagement the trio received a telegram from an old friend, Ben Piazza, then a vaudeville booking agent and later a casting director in Hollywood. He asked them to do him a great favor and play a week in Minneapolis.

JIM ASKED his partners what kind of show town ‘‘Minneanapolis” was. “Have "you ever played it, Eddie?” . “Sure, I played it years ago with Jackson and Taylor.” “What kinda audience they got out there?” “A little tough," but so far we been lucky on the road, and 1 don't see why we should miss

there.”

“Oh, great.” sal ” sald Jimmy Then

he asked Lou of his “experi‘ences,

“It's a great town,” said Clayton. “1 played it three ; times. Georgie Burns and ; Gracie Allen are there, and

might stay over a day or two to catch our act.”

“All right then,” said Durante, “let's knock off the week at Mindeapolis.” y o ” »

CONCERNING a ‘time that still stands out as a sore memory, Jimmy ‘says, “Our routine consisted of such numbers as ‘I Can Do Without Broadway, but Can Broadway Do Without Me?’ ‘Jimmy, the Well - Dressed Man,’ and Eddie doin’ his strut, and numbers like ‘I Ups to Him,’ and I don't remember what we finished with, We had with us a kid workin’ as a kinda secretary, Jack Harvey. He's one of our writers now. “There was an act on ahead of us called. ‘The Cowboy and the Girl! Now I'm standin’ fi the wings, and they got lines like ‘Roses are red, violets blue, horses neck, do you?’ And this

act was gettin’ dynamite laughs. “And so we are in high

spirits, and I go out there. 1 look down at Georgie Burns and Gracie Allen in the audience, and they applaud like mad, but we get little applause from anybody else. And then I open with ‘Jimmy, the Well-Dressed Man. “Believe me, in all the years 1 been in the business—nothin’, just nothin’ happened. I got on a raccoon coat, and I remember hearin’ someone in the audience sayin’ out loud, ‘He's not well dressed.’ ” s a ra “AND THEN we do ‘I Know Darn Well I Can Do Without Broadway,’ and I come to a line where Shubert is supposed | to be standin’ in the wings and | he comes out and says, ‘Jimmy, | put in both knees, and Jolson | goes. Nothin’. Nothin’ at all. And that was our biggest laugh in New York, “Now we're discouraged. Discouraged. Jackson didn't go so good with his number either, Lou got some applause for his dancin’, but everythin’ was | kind of sour and we go off. “To make things tougher, | this Kid Harvey is out on the | street one day, and he walks against the lights, and a cop

gives him a ticket, and he calls

the cop a hick. And then headlines come out that one of the boys in the band called aseop a hick and we think this is a hick town. Well, I coulda died. “Harvey was locked up. He needed ten - dollars’ bail or somethin’. I didn’t let hinf have <it. I says, ‘Let him rot there.’ None of us went down to the jail. . We let him get out the best he could. “And. the act went very bad, and onvtop of this guy callin’ a cop a hick, which was out of line. I said to Lou, ‘Aw, please, let's drop and go home.'"” n LJ “WELL, Burns and Allen are awful good people but they come to our dressin’ room and they simply got to laugh about this. They had done well, and they always did do well. And around the bookin’ offices in New . York, every time Lou would show up, the booker would say, ‘Do you want us to book you in Minneapolis?’ ” The Minneapolis fizzle awakened the Schnozzola to the realities of American taste for comedy beyond the small area of Times Square. “We hadn't given them what they wanted,” he says. “It was before the big broadcastin® days, and sound was just comin’ inta the movies, and I found out that Broadway and New York ain't the whole world. There's a great big country outside of it, and each place

and you got to have an act

J that is right down to earth. -

“It wasn't the fault of Minneapolis. It was our fault. And I was very happy a long time afterward in 1934 when Minneapolis voted me the best comedian in pictures. I loved ’em for this. I loved ’em for teachin’ me a valuable lesson.”
