Holdup z
‘Slick. Will; < By United Press NEW YORK, Feb, 22=.A former convict signed a statement today that police believed would close the case of Slick Willie Sutton and the $69,933 holdup of a Long Island bank. Thomas, De Venuta, 37, gave the statement to Assistant Queens County District Attorney James P. McGrattan after he was charged with assisting Sutton and Thomas (Mad Dog) Kling in the Mar. 9, 1950, robbery, Mr. McGrattan said he would not disclose the contents of De Venuta's cenfession until his men had investigatéd the facts, But a detective captain said police ‘had learned ‘recently . that only three men participated {n the bank holdup and that the arrest of De Venuta Wednesday had cleaned up” the case. Police previously had reported that five men staged the stickup. All Have Musfaches Authorities likened Sutton, Kling and De Venuta to three peas in a pod because they resemble each other, the gimmick In each case being a neat mustache. : Sutton and Kling, who were “classmates” at a Philadelphia prison before Slick Willie slipped to freedom five years ago, sported thin, pencil-line mustaches that turned up to their nostrils, while De Ventura favored a slightly thicker, straight-line type. Police were convinced the three men; who have similar facial features and body proportions, grew the mustaches to confuse witnesses to a robbery they had been planning. Like Sutton- and Kling, De Venuta was implicated in the Long Island robbery by an official of the bank who viewed a, police lineup yesterday.
