ram eo. Schools Open To Negroes In Kentucky

: By. ALVIN E. WHITE Written for Seripps-Howard Newspapers For the second time in its long existence, Berea College in Ken‘tucky is accepting Negro students, - Until 1871, Berea had - a mixed student body. But a state law

separating races in schools was passed that year, forcing Berea te draw the line against Negroes. The law was repealed in 1950 and Berea again has accepted Negro students.

In ‘eight Southern states, 20 other colleges now accept Negroes. Fourteen are colleges under Baptist, Catholic, Methodist or Presbyterian control. The athers are theological seminaries, Unlike the richer and larger state colleges, which admitted Negroes under a U, 8 Supreme Court decision, these private colleges voluntarily accepted. Negroes. Their officials acted independ. ently, of the court ruling, although the ruling paved the way. Among other factors expediting the ac ceptance of Negroes were the ehanging attitudes. .of younger white students and. the acceptance of Negro students hy fac ulty members.

Problems Remain

But not all problems ifivolved have been solved. Those remaining are more of a social than an educational nature. Certain. colleges lifted all restrictions relating to dormitory residence or dining halls, but others still do not permit Negroes in either dormitories or dining halls. They still are seeking a workable system,

On the other side, Negro institutions long have had white stu-/ dents. Some were children of facuty members. At Hampton Institute, Va.,, a student exchange program has been operating for 10 years. Negroes from Hampton attend white colleges in Ohio and the white colleges send white stu-| dents to Hampton where the stii- | dent lives on the campus and takes an aetive part in campus e, \

Lincoln: University, in Pennsyl- | vania, has had many white students. In 1040, a white athlefe played center on the football team there and later was elected captain,
