Hoosier Hoopla and Resolutions

NOW THAT the state high school basketball tournament schedules have been drawn, published and distributed, you're going to read a lot about resolutions on the part of coaches and adult fans to deport themselves with dignity and gentlemanliness come victory OR defeat. How's that again? . . . It's almost like the end of the world for a Hoosier high school hasketball team to get knocked off in a sectional.

Some years ago, believe or don't, a team failed to score a single point, not even a free one, in its sectional game . . . and right here in Indiana . . . That gooseegg record still hangs high along the Wabash, or was it along the Whitewater ? Eddie Ash They come in all sizes and youthful ages in Indiana’s high school basketball tournament . . Deadeye Dick Schleicher, 14, regular forward, plays on the Borden High team in the Jeffersonville sectional . . . His pal, Jack Reilly, 15, plays center. That's about as early out of the cradle we know of for net snipers in the Hoosier Hoopla classic this year . School enrollment is 75. Here's luck to the Borden Berries and their downycheeked heroes . . . Willie Willis, the coach, used to attend old Purdue . . . He's all of 26.

- " » = ” » In reading down the state sectional drawings we discovered there ain't no Santa Clous in the tournament . . . No high -school there . . . Old Santa is kept too busy to practice round ‘ball . . . The state-wide event furnishes the bitter with the sweet . . , The Salts of Epsom High start their firing against Loogootee in the Washington sectional. . . . Ireland will haul off with its shillelagh against French Lick to touch off the fireworks in the Huntingburg district meet . . . Who remembers when Beaver Dam was a state title threat and the No. 1 “people’s choice”? . . . Only the Eager Beavers didn’t get quite that far.

o n 8 u u on YONE HOOSIER high school coach is making good en his New Year's resolution to quit screaming and gesturing at the referees . . . Rough going, though . .. He now lets off steam in an odd way . . . He dances around his team's bench and shouts his feelings to his players instead of directly to the referee . . . Still almost sweats blood, though, whenever-a decision goes the other way . . . Look for the New Year's resolution to crack and crumble in the

sectionals. *» 2 zs a

NM o How thoroughly read are the long lists of high school basketball scores after the weekly heavy Friday night schedules? . Dick Hiner of the Rushville Telegram experimented . . . He inserted “Hamburger 58, Liverwurst 37" . . . One fan called to ask about it . , , Probably wanted to be sure he wasn’t missing out on any possible darkhorses in the IHSAA barn . . . Remember. the days of the 16-team state tourney finals in Indianapolis? . . . All that frenzied competition was wrapped up .in just two days . . . Everybody went loco, including the press . . . Team followers stormed into the city two days ahead of the fireworks and the panic was on in the downtown district. - ” " n " n BERNIE CRIMMINS, Indiana University's new head football coach, already has made the lecturers’ league , He's to be one of the principal professors at the college grid clinic to be held in Convention Hall, Atlantic City, N. J., next Monday through Thursday . .. He's in the big league right off the bat, the kickoff, that is. Among those who are slated to join the Hoosiers’ mentor in discussing the finer points of the big-time pig-_| skin sport are Ray Eliot of Illinois’ undefeated Rose Bow! | champs, Biggie Munn of undefeated Michigan State, Charlie Caldwell of undefeated Princeton, Bud Wilkinson of Oklahoma, Woodie Hayes of Ohio State and Sid Gillman of Cincinnati . .. Quite an array of “name” coaches

for one clinic. ” » o o os

Kansas City is beating the drums about a new strikeout artist on the Blues’ pitching staff . . . Jim Russell is the name . . . He's a 20-year-old lefthander and last year was his first in league ball . . . Pitching for Twin Falls in the Class C Pioneer League, Russell won 22 games and lost nine . . . He rolled up 296 strikeouts in ‘260 innings . . , Twin Falls, like Kansas City, is a member of the New York Yankee farm system . . . Leave it to the Yanks to dig up the young phenoms.
