Measure Would Kill Public Housing

‘Move Might Make City Pay Damages

An ordinance that, If passed, would kill all the proposed public| housing projects in Indianapolis, | was introduced in the City Coun-

cil last night. ¥

The measure, submitted by, Councilman J. Wesley. ‘Brown, South Side Republican, kill all powers previously given the Indianapolis Housing Authority to proceed on housing projects] with federal loans. Basically, it would repeal ait ordinances passed last year by the | Democrat - controlled Council] which gave the Housing Authority! a specific go-ahead. “Councilman Brown ordinance was not prepared by the| City legal.department. “Some of us just got together, and drafted the ordinance our-| selves,” he said. #

Councilman Brown said he was| assisted by Attorney Walter Myers Jr., who represents a group ot South Side residents in an in-| junction suit filed last week to stop the housing projects. | City Corporation Counsel P.K.| Ward said the ordinance, if passed, would break the City’s] previous contract with the Hous-| ing Authority and such action would make the City liable for

damages. He said the damages. would amount to the total cash spent]

thus far by the Housing Au-| thority on plans and purchase of] land for two projects. Donald Hanson, Housing Au-| thority secretary, said the agency has spent $275,000 of federal loans to date. The repealing measure was introduced without the blessings of the City administration,

Fears Risk of Damages
