Fix It Yourself—

Glassless Storm Windows,

By HUBBARD (OBB

Even people who find use for practically everybody and any: thing. are stumped with what to do with storm windows without glass in them.& Without doubt these are the most useless items in the world you'd best get busy and replace the glass. As this is going to be a cold job, take the storm sashes. down and do the . regiazing indoors where you'll both be nice and comfortable. Remove any pieces of the old glass and remove the putty {rom the recess cut. into the wood. Give the wood a day or so in which to dry and then apply linseed oil to the recess in which the glass fits, While you are at it, measure the size of the opening, deduct about !; inch on each side and “then get a piece of glass this size from your hardware store. You'll also ‘need some glazing putty, a putty” knife and some glazier's points.” Return home

80

with these articles and apply a * thin coat of putty to the shoulders Slip the glass into

of the recess. place and gently press down until the edges make contact with the putty” at all points. Now install the glazier’s points. These are forced into the sides of the recess and help to hold the glass in place. Use a point every six inches vr so. Drive the points in so they'll hold but don’t drive 'em too far or they won't do any good at all. When all the points are n, you must apply a coat of putty to cover the joint between glass and outer edge of the recess of the frame. This must be made ta slope so it will shed water. Getting the slope is something that takes a little practice and patience but it can be done. Allow this coat of putty to dry for a day or so indoors and then give it a coat of outsidé paint. When the paint is dry the storm window is ready to go outside again and do you some good.

Notes on Catbon Tetrachloride

Just in case you were a. little late getting here, the topic under discussion is carbon tetrachloride —a handy sort of liquid that is fine for removing grease and oil stains from various substances and for putting out fire. There are, however, certain precautions that must be observed when using this fluid. Carbon tetrachloride is somewhat similar to chloroform in composition and almost everyone knows that if you breathe. in enough fumes from chloroform vou go to sleep. This means you

. should only use carbon tetrachlor- : ide in well ventilated rooms where . there is a sufficient movement of then be sure that the heaters

side. In spots such as the basement where ventilation is usually pretty bad it is best to use some other kind of solvent which is completely non-toxic. Carbon tetrachloride, along with such other itms like strawberries, chocolate and iobster newburg hits some people worse than others, This is particularly true if the persdn is suffering from a liver disease. As the use of carbon tetrachloride under these circumstances can be extremely dangerous its use should be avoided. ‘ Summing things up, if you are in good health- and use carbon tetrachloride only in well tilated areas where you will not inhale the fumes it still makes a dandy remover for grease and oil stains and also for putting out fires.

Heating Nofes’

A little point that a lot of people forget is that a fire=requires a good deal of oxygen to keep it oing. We also happen to need a good deal ‘of the same stuff, Now during the cold weather there is a strong tendency in a lot of the place up: so tightly that no fresh oxygen can get in. This is especially true in small homes and apartments for a large place can seldom be made very airtight. As the supply of oxygen goes down, the flame from the heater goes down and so do you. You may not go out but you'll mope around with a headache and feel only half alive. And that’s about all you dre. Always make sure that there is sufficient fresh air getting into your house You and your heater. Another point on the same line is that many space heaters don't have ‘ny flue or chimney. This means that the gases which are produced by burning fuel mix with the air you breathe. A small quantity of these odorless gases

won't hurt you but during the

night with the house sealed up tight and the fire going full blast, the percentage of these gases in the air can raise to a dangerously high degree. The. best policy is to have all heaters equipped with a flue or vent so that the gases flow outdoors. If this can’t be done

aren’t in the bedrooms and .that
