Credit Birds or Romans—Valentines Are Fun
By ANDREW TULLY
Serippa-Hoeward Siaff Writer Today is St. Valentine's Day.
| But your guess is as good as | anybody's as to how it came to | be a day when guys are sup- | posed to send loving messages

and vice versa, To date, there aré three theo-
ries. One is that Feb, 14 is the
day when birds begin to mate.
| Another is that.it traces back
to the old Norman word, “galantin,” meaning a lover of women. The third is that the day is a survival of the ancient Roman festival of Laupercalia, when
boys and girls drew lots to see

Chaucer was a bird-mating-theory man himself. He once wrote a poem which began
“For this was Seynt Valentyne's Day When every foul cometh ther to choose his mate” However, most students figure Chaucer was as poor a. histo rian as he was .a speller hecause what little evidence there
is favors the Lupercalian theory,
Church Takes a Hand
Back in the old days, when Christianity was young, the church was annoyed because its youth continued to observe the feast of Lupercalia. So some early Pope decided that, Instead of banning thé fun, he'd take It over, He set up. a new custom whereby the hames of saints were substituted for the names
The boys and girls didn’t find this as much fun as the ld Roman custom; but parents went big for the idea and saw to it that’ their offspring at least went through the motions. Three Sts. Valentine Now. for. 8t, Valentine him-gelf-—-or, rather; Sts. Valentine themselves because there are three of them mentioned in church history. One is described as a priest of Rome and another as Bishop of Terni, but there's no record of the third except for his name and his martyrdom,
The Bt, V alentine most
closely linked to Valentihe's - Day is the Bishop of Terni, who had a hard death, being first beaten with clubs and then beheaded. His death occurred on Feb. 14, which gave the church a good excuse for transforming the Lupercalian festival into a religious holiday. In the old days there was a lot more to St. Valentine's Day than now. For instance, the first person you met when you went out on Feb. 14 was supposed to he the one ‘you were to marry. Naturally people cheated. In England a conniving mother.

Shakespeare Helped
The first Valentine cards were written in Shakespeare's day and delivered The bard himself tossed off a few Valentine's Day verses and had Ophelia mention the day in “Hamlet,” The verse, Roses are red, violets are blue, ete.” was written about that time by some anonymous versifier, > It was around the 1880's that the first comic Valentines were | perines. U. S. Slates $400 Million Britain Aid
WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 (UP) ~The United States will spend nearly $400 million this year to help the empire which Queen Elizabeth II has now been called upon to rule. Things have changed a lot since the time of Britain's last queen in the great Victorian era of the 19th century. { Great wars and changing economic and social forces have taken their toll. More and more, Britain has had to lean on fits former American colony to help, it maintain its position as a world power. The turn came when Britain, at one time this country's creditor, borrowed $4 billion from the U. 8. during the first World War, But that was peanuts compared to the bill it ran up during and since World War II, In the last 11 years of war and peace, the United Kingdom has received more than $30 billion from America, in lend-lease equipment, in surplus property, in Marshall Plan economic ald, and : in loans. That is the net figure ; Or after deducting the reverse lend- a lease aid furnished to this country. Other parts of the empire’ have received more than $436 million in addition.
