Chicagoans
Demand a Cleanup
CHICAGO, Feb. 13 (UP)— Civic and industrial leaders, incensed by the slaying of’ a poli, tician, called city officials to account in a mass meeting yesterday and proposed a campaign by
all the people to clean gafgsters out of politics. More than 300 of Chicago's foremost leaders jammed info a
. hotel auditorium. Some 200 pri;
vate citizens were turned away at. the door for lack of invitations. It was an almost unprecedented display of public’ indignation in case-hardened Chicago — brought on by the gangland-style slaying Jast week of Charles Gross, a comparatively obscure Republican ward leader,
Resisted Pressure
Mr. Gross had resisted hoodlum pressures generated by the city’s notorious ‘“west-side bloc” of wards, where many politicians are said to be in league with mobsters. " The meeting was called by the Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry and the Chicago Crime Commission, whose officials - blasted the trend of gangsters muscling “their way into ward after ward with the
purpose of gaining political
power.” One by one city officials from Mayor Martin H. Kennelly on down were called upon to discuss the issue, and many of them took the occasion to cite their own achievements in office. Guy Reed, president of Association of Commerce and Industry, told them, however, that “we are looking for cures, not politics.” Mr. Reed called for a citizens
the
organization which. would work * to abolish the ward system from =
city government. and other reforms.
A Lot of Money Mr. Reed said such work would
take “a lot of money” and pro- B
posed that the citizens be asked to contribute $1 apiece, with a
limit of $10 for any one con- E
tribution.
Austin L. Wyman, president of the crime commission, called the
roll of city officials, asking each 9
rhetorically why such a thing as the Gross killing could happen. Mayor Kennelly called the slaying a “grave situation,” but. told
. the meeting that much progress
toward eliginating hoodlum operations has been made in his administration. . “I am not my brother’s keeper,” Mayor Kennelly said. “I can take care of myself and my own office only.” This was regarded by observers as a slap at other city officials.

- This HEART KITCHEN La - WILL BE ON DISPLAY - on Monument Circle in front of the Power & Light Building, . Monday through Saturday.
® The needs of a heart patient prompted the design of this kitchen, presented by the Indiana Heart Foundation. However, you needn't have heart disease to adapt many of its practical energy and time-saving ideas | + which were developed from reseagch studies of engineers and home economists at Cornell, Wisconsin, Purdue and Columbia Universities. “The “heart kitchen” was constructed and put on wheels so that all might see how these heart saving ideas are put into actual use. The need for lifting, carrying, stooping, and stretching have been minimized in | every way possible to eliminate fatigue. - We hope you will find many ideas’in our “heart kitchen" that you ‘will be able to incorporate in your own. Doing so, step-by-step if need be, will not only give you a better kitchen, but also one that's kind to your heart. : . ci .
