your first plan. Mr. Abel spent all his time in today’s deal worrying about how to play the club suit. Of course, he was under a strain, playing with Mr. Champion who had been yelling at him all
during the rubber, ° In any case, Mr. Abel
he did not give himself every chance for his contract. Mr. Dale opened the four of hearts and Mr. Masters’ to: hold. The jack of hearts was returned and Mr. Abel had to win it.
HE LED A low club toward the dummy and Mr. Dale played the 10. Dummy’s ace won ahd Mr. Abel went into the library. Was that 10 a singleton or had Mr. Dale started with the queen and 10-alone? There was another very real possibility. Mr. Dale may have started with the 10 and a low club. He would play the 10 from that holding, hoping to talk Mr. Abel out of finessing the jack on the second club lead. Mr. Abel finally decided to play Mr. Masters for the queen of clubs. He led back the eight from the board and let it ride. Mr. Dale .won and rattled off enough heart tricks to defeat the contract.
Mr. Champion shook his head angrily. “Abel,” he said,
dispose of it by changing its self-doubtfulness to self-ap-preciation. To deal justly “with her two sons, Mrs. Bryan should prepare to grant -her older son the full spotlight on his natal day while at the sanie time she steps up Buddy's intake of love. # wT A JEALOUS CHILD who needs a stronger love than he's been getting. He is suffering from anemia of self-esteem. To repair this deficiency, we pursue him, not with vitamins and calves’ liver, bit ‘with nourishment for his sense of importance to us. Of course, there's no use deluding ourselves. It's much easier _to buy Buddy a pair of skates than giving him this love-rich. diet. For example, it would take resourcefulness to persuade him that we" really need his assistance on working out plans for Rafe's birthday. It might take quite a good deal of patience to take him shopping with us for Rafe’'s present, decide on the flavor and icing for ice cream and cake, on the friends Rafe might particularly like for dinner on his birthday night.

‘you seem to have Jost track of the basic fact, that there are four suits in the'deck.”. “It was just a guess about the queen of clubs,” replied Mr. Abel defensively. “I am not asking you to drop | lone queens,” Mr. Champion continued. “I am ‘merely asking you to play the hand right. Maybe you would have gone down playing it right, -but-at least you -would have given yourself an extra chance.” Mr. Abel was flustered now and still didn’t see the point. “Here's what I mean,” went on Mr. Champion. “You thought only about the club suit. Of course we would. We have undertaken to show Buddy how important his needs and pleasures are to us. The special birthday gift no longer represents special love and Buddy will be able to lean across the table and say, “They're racers.
