MRS. WHITE wasn't so lucky when she was a girl. . She watched her grandmother sew gix months on the Pine Bur design quilt. She hurried home from school, a mile and a half over fields with snow drifted fence-deep, to watch it being made. While her grandmother quilted, she pretended the quilt spread over frames was her

playhouse. But Mrs. White, then Mary Weaber, never slept under the

blue and white quilt. Her grandmother, as did housewives of that period, “kept back for company” their prize handwork. When Mary Weaver went to bed, she crawled in under the comfort made from scraps of her dresses, up under the eaves, el THE BLUE and white quilt with 86 delicate pieces in each of its blocks, became Mrs. White's
