Mr. Fusty's Playing Is Better Than His Bidding

HERE is my advice on -

what to do when Mr. Fusty, the old - fashioned

bidder, opens with a three bid. First, you must yourself to the fact that the hand is going to be played in his suit. You must forget your suit or suits unless you have one which outranks his and you are willing to go all the way to a grand slam. However, if you can play his suit, raise him once with a fair to good hand. With a powerhouse, give him a double raise. In today’s deal Mr. Dale forgot all about his two major guits and raised Mr. Fusty to five clubs. the final contract. - = ” FORTUNATELY for himself (and his partner) Mr. Fusty's play is better than his bidding. He won the opening lead of the queen of diamonds with the ace and paused to look the situation over.

Mr. Abel

The easy (and.careless) way"

to play the hand is to pick up the trumps, then lead the ace and another spade, hoping that suit breaks 2-2. If it does, you are in. If it doesn’t, you are down one. Mr. Fusty didn’t put all his dependence on the spade suit breaking evenly. At the second

trick he led to the ace of hearts, returned a heart and ruffed it. Then he cashed the .ace and king- of clubs, led a third heart and ruffed it. 3 2 n = HE PICKED up the last outstanding trump and led a spade to dummy's ace. Since the hearts had broken 4-3, dummy's king and seven of hearts were both good and provided a parking place for two of Mr. Fusty’'s small spades. Thus he won six clubs, twos, diamonds, three hearts and a spade. Note that his line of play gave .him an additional chance for his contract. In other words, if the hearts had not broken 4-3, he still had the spade play available. |
