GOP Picture Is Garbled, Conflicting

By NOBLE REED Candidates for U. S. Senator, Governor and other state offices have been thrown into

a whirlpool of conflicting pres-| g

sures and smoke screens of indecision. Republican pressure have been plaving checkers with at least nine prospective candidates for Governor, either dodging

hookups with presidential candi-! dates or trying to get on national 3

party bandwagons. a

Three GOP groups -are jockey-

ing for position.

One is trying to unite forces of

Sen. Robert Taft behind a, Governor candidate,

Ike, Taft and O

Another is trying top Governor candidate in with the presidential movement for Gen. Eisenhower. A third is maneuvering: to get a Governor candidate without at tachment to either Taft or Eisenhower forces.

Results right now are a mass

* of contradictions in the GOP.

Only one candidate for the GOP Governor nomination—Samuel R Harrell, Acme-Evans Milling Co executive and civic leader—has

announced formally.

Others are running for Governor through their friends, holding

- back on any public pronounce-

ments until the smoke clears. Holdouts

These include Becretary of State Leland Smith, Geroge N. Craig, former national commander of the American Legion whose friends opened headquarters last week, President Pro Tem of State Senate John VanNess, State Sen. Russell Bontrager, Speaker of Indiana House of Representative W. O. Hughes and Walter Helmke, former Ft. Wayne Mayor. ,Others. mentioned include Richard James, former lieu-tenant-governor and now sec-

. retary of Hoosier Motor Club and

State Sen. Harold Hanley, LaPorte. . Backers of most candidates are identified closely with the Taft forces. Most of Mr. Craig's friends are in the Eisenhower camp. GOPers have dodged any indication of a contest against U. 8. Sen William E. Jenner who has announced he will run for re-election instead of for Governor as party leaders once thought he planned.

Smoke Screen?

In fact, some party leaders have questioned Sen. Jenner's announcement for re-election, wondering if It might not be 4 smoke screen to cover up a switch of the Jenner machine to grab the Governor nomination at the last minute in case of some deadlock. “Could be” declared one highup party leader who is shoulder - deep in the Governor scramble,

FAIRFIELD, Cal, Jan. 26 Ralph Fong, 23, was charged today with trying to hire two Air Force men to kill hig pretty young wife because “I love her] too much to shoot her myself.” Fong, a fruit grower, said he needed his wife’s $10,00 insurance |

Sheriff Thomas E. Joyce and District Attorney Philip B. Lynch | signed a complaint against Fong, | claiming the fruit grower offered | $1500 to two Travis Field airmen | to kill his wife. i “I don’t want the sheriff's office to do anything about this,” Mrs. Fong said. “I love my husband.” Sheriff Joyce sald Fong was trapped last night after he gave Airmen James Gleason and Angel Velande of the Travis ipolice. squadran his .30 caliber jrifle. Lineup of candidates for Sec-

retary.of State, Auditor and State Treasurer are all shoved in the background, waiting until the Governor jig-saw. puzzle falls into a recognizable pattern. The Demorcatic Party's picture in the Governor and U. 8. Senate ‘lineups is much less complicated but more vague Those mentioned so far for the Democratic Governor nomination include Roger Branigin, Lafa yette attorney; Lieut.-Gov. John A. Watkins, U. 8. District Attorney Matthew Welsh, who is re: signing federal job soon: Anson Thomas, tax and legislative expert for the Indiana Farm Bureau and B. Howard Caughran, former U. 8. district attorney.

Andy Acts It

The only candidate who acts like, one in the Democratic picture for U. 8, Senator is Andrew Jacobs, former Congressman from Indianapolis and arch foe of National Democratic Committeeman Frank McHale. Other Democrats mentioned so far for the -U. 8. Senate race include Congressman Winfield Denton, Evansville and State Sen Leo Stemle, of Jasper. Indications now point to sharply drawn factional lines behind Democratic .candidates on the basis of whether they are proMcHale or anti-McHale.
