» » ~ n » ” : THE SYSTEM worked swell for a time, except for the fact the news of the sumptuous meals got around to other camps and Miller found himself swamped with walk-in guests, all hungry and eager to gorge themselves on home cooking. That started eating into the budget, especially the day that two officials and two baseball. from the Buffalo camp dropped in and refused to shove their chairs back until the platter was clean Miller Miller brought two experienced chefs from Indianapolis to take charge of the kitchen, do the marketing and prepare the food in Hoosier style. . , . This worked fine, at the start, until one of the chefs sniffed out a%leak in the local option dry county's road block against John Barleycorn. That put too much work on the other chef, the one who kept his nose clean. . Service in the dining room slowed down ond the boll players rode Miller. . . , So the secretary hustled downtown and got the lost week-end chef sprung . . . on probation . . . The cook straightened up and order in the kitchen and dining room was restored . , . briefly, that is.

About that time Owner Norman A. Perry of the Indians landed in camp to look things over . . . came Friday and the men naturally called for fish Pressed for
time, Miller hustled out and bought an armful of the canned
variety. ” ” " ~ » y i” OWNER PERRY pulled himself up to the dinner table, spotted the canned fish and turned a fishy eve on Miller, then he said, as we recall it; “Here we are in Florida. famed for its plentiful fresh water fish and teeming with sea food right off the hoat, and we get canned goods from Alaska.” Miller had to run the gantlet of player wisecracks
again but bore up well and eased out of the dilemma by rounding up some Kansas City steaks the next day. On the whole, however, his supervised food and serv-
ing system was a good deal, it kept the players happy and complaints were few and minor If that one chef hadn't bugged .out everything would have heen rosy
