. Supporting Cast Cod A Murat Hit

3 ———— By HENRY BUTLER “Darkness at Noon,” which opened last ght at the Murat, has the best supporting cast 1 recall ever having seen in a touring show here. That's not belittling the work of Kdward G. Robinson inthe stellar role of Rubashov - — repudiated old-guard revolution- credits would fill another space ary hounded to death by the this size. But 1 want to add to tv in the USSR wove mentions some others: Guy =Party in the USSR. Arbury, as lvanoff, former com It's rather calling attention 10 a a 4a of Rubashov, is swell. Story Described

A couple of Synday columns I this space have described briefly the stary of “Darkness at Noor Tnwittingly prophetic, I wrote ast Sunday that Rubashov in the play seemed to resemble the late Maxim Litvinov. On Mgnday, The Times began the fascinating se ries baeirhiard Hottelet describ “irig 3 off-the-record interview with IA4tvinov, If you read the Hottelet series vou need little more briefing on the Sidney Kingsley play, adapted from Arthur Koestler's novel. Mr. Hottelet wrote in factual terms what Mr. Koestler wrote Yn his novel: Naked power is murderous Remove the restraints of morality and religion, and your fine revo lutionary ideals wind up in wholesale slaughter. But the play is more than an indictment of Soviet Russia today. it’s an indictment of absolutism

Point Challenged

The big philosophical point in it is that the Marxist revolutionary notion, “Ends justify means,” is false. Not only false, but fatal. Maybe that sounds . tenuous as material for drama, but Mr. Robinson and his co-workers moving, exciting and memorable enterprise make it seem prodigious, You would scarcely believe any play set in a grim Soviet prison,| with a few flashbacks to other] sordid scenes, could be so grips| ping. You will have to see it to get the impact. Film fans may wonder how Mr. . Robinson looks and acts on the stage. Well, he looks iike Beethoven with a haircut And 1 imagine his personality is not too

unlike the late Ludwig's, in the latter's better moments. ‘Not So Tough’ t Anyway, he's not the tough,
