Serious Fire at Block’s

The sprinkler system in The Wm. H. Block Co. department store prevented a fire from spreading early this morning and held damage to a minimum. The fire started in a paper chute which extends from the {subbasement to the roof, and its {heat started the sprinkler system operating. - Smoke funneled out the top of the paper chute and did not cause any appreciable damage to mer|chandise, firemen reported.
