Third Man Implicated In Forgery Ring Here

A state police detective and two troopers today headed for Florida to pick up two key suspects in an

Indiana check forgery ring which §

now is rapidly running out of } ink. And federal authorities today

stepped in with a warrant against a third” suspect, threatening him

with a sfiffer penalty than state @

laws provide, Detective C. Howard Hyslope, with Troopers Oscar Burkett and Gale - Kassen,* are driving to Tampa, Fla. to pick up two In-

dianapolis men accused of being

ringleader and chief accomplice in the fantastic scheme which

netted about $100,000 in two years. The suspects told Florida authorities they would return

willingly to Indiana. Florida authorities also held two Indianapolis women who they said lived in ‘luxury with the check forgery suspects. State police said no charges were being prepared here against the women, one married to a soldier and the other to a man living in Arkansas. Captured on forgery charges were: Clyde Isenhour, 31-year-old Indianapolis man accused of masterminding the -$100,000 forging gang while he was a tuberculosis patient in Sunnyside Sanatorium here.

Robert L. Chastain, 29, Indianapolis. This leaves only two. of the

original 13-man ring at large. Federal authorities here today stepped in against Joseph M. Gabbard, 36, Indianapolis, was arrested Saturday as a member of the gang. He had been held in Marion County Jail for Bartholomew County authorities who hold a warrant -eharging him with forgery. Federal prosecution could sock Gabbard with a sentence of five vears in prison and $5000 fine—

much stiffer than state penalties! —

Gabbard, now charged with forging a $70 ‘'U. 8. Treasury check, today waived preliminary hearing before a U. 8. Commissioner and was placed under $3000 bond. In Tampa, - Sheriff Hugh Culbreath said: “We're sure Isenhour and Chastain were ready to start forging payroll checks again.” “They told us they were going to start the ring again and planned to peddle phony payroll checks in Florida and possibly as far as Atlanta,” Sheriff Culbreath told The Times. Sheriff's deputies confiscated a new check printing press at their home. It was bought recently from a Connecticut firm. The two couples were cozily settled in a “fancy and expensive” resort, home they had rented in Tampa, authorities said. ~ Both women, 21 and 24 years

Cafe Owner Loses Bid For Acquittal

Cafe owner Edwin Husbands, on trial for the fatal shooting of

a Camp Atterbury mess sergeant, § a bid for a directed’

today lost verdict of acquittal. Judge Saul I. Rabb, Criminal Court 2, denied the motion hy Husbands’ lawyers who said the prosecution had “wholly” failed to prove a second-degree murder indictment. Earlier, the state had cotpleted its case against the owner of Eddie's Cafe, 401 E. Washington St. Husbands is cHarged with shooting Sgt. William Jagloski, 28th Division GI, in a, fight in the restaurant June 29. The sergeant's widow told the jury yesterday she kept a day and night vigil at his bedside until he died 10 days later. Mrs. William Jagloski, Phoenix, Ariz., testified Sgt. Jagloski's death left fatherless their son, 7, and daughter, 3. Mrs. Jagloski said her husband

served -4i-months..during. . World §

War II and was recalled in Sept, 1950, as a member of the 28th Division, which later trained at Camp Auerbury,

old, are mothers. The soldier's wife is being sued for divorce here. Sheriff Culbreath and his deputies caught them after a narrow miss earlier this week. On a “tip from Indiana State Police, they visited a resort home in Riverview, near Tampa, but discov ered that Isenhour, Chastain and the women had skipped out a few hours before. But they learned there that Isenhour bought a 1951 Mercury in Tampa. They traced it to a used car lot. One of the salesmen who was shown a picture of the forgery suspects spotted Isenhour last night at a drive-in theater. Isenhour was caught at the theater. He gave deputies his address and Chastain was nabbed at the home when he returned there early today.
