Cock Then followed a humorous description of the long hours Mr. McPherson would put in at the office and the mill, doing the things he had been doing all the time during his pre-re-tirement years. Retirements ‘like that make life miserable for ‘voung Charlie” or former colleagues who are now pestered by an old man hanging around ‘with his ever-ready criticism: “That ain't the way to do it.” Make up your mind to ‘go ‘all out” when you retire. You must resolve that you are leaving responsibilities for decisions and executions to your successor—absolutely. Let him come to you for advice if he wants ft, but do not be disappointed if he does not. : You have served your time, done your stuff, and you are through. Your successor should be free to carry on in his own way, with the privilege of making his own mistakes. The McPhersons, bearing the honorary title of ‘Emeritus,’ are more often than not plain nuisances with their tendency to keep their “finger in the pie,” to criticize or instruct with their “this is the way we did it” advice. Even though it {= sound, it is not necessarily acceptable.

NO, WHEN vou retire, direct your urge to "keep active” into other channels. After a, lifetime at an office desk or. behind a counter or before a class or on a sales route or at a machine, that advice may hot be easy to follow. Especially hard if you never had much in the way of compelling interests outside your job. The urge to keep active is a wholesome attitude, and retired folks are immeasurably better off doing something. worth while than ylelding to the traditional idea that retirement means a surcease from activities and settling down to a vegetable sort of existence. There is no real comfort in having nothing to do. It is In fact a dreary existence. Look in the blank, faces of some of the inmates of an old folks’ home who just sit around. Possible activities for the retired might be classified under a few general heads, such as: Activities connected with the home. Cultivation of hobbies and special interests. Volunteer services to the church. Volunteer services to other organizations or the community. Full or part-time paid employment. You will be surprised on retiring if you stick around the home awhile to discover how much time it takes for Its effective maintenance. You'll appreciate vour wife more when you try to help her with her usual round of household duties. After your clumsy * efforts to make a. bed or dust the .front rooms or wash the dishes or run the vacuum

Draining Water From Brain Possible

By Relence Service WASHINGTON, Jan. 12—Vein grafts may some day be used to remedy water on the “brain, known medically as . hydrocephalus. Experiments with animals pointing toward this possible future treatment of human vatients were reported by Dr, Brian Blades of George Washington University - School of Medicine here at a conference on blood vessel grafts Dr. Blades emphasized the work 1s still experimental.
