that barring war or a new act of Soviet aggression this the beginning of the end of the defense boom. This, in itself, is a factor in the business outlook. It restrains inflation. When the North Koreans first crossed the 38th Parallel, the defense economy was as big and as wide as individual imaginations. But now the magnitude of the conflict has taken form. Plans are for a limited war, not an allout war. The specter of shortages and belt-tightening, which produced a run on stores in July, August, and September, 1950, and again in January, 1951, after the Chinese Reds had entered the struggle, has disappeared. Department store inventories are now down 15 per cent from their high of early this year

As against that, however, the cutbacks in automobile output, further curtailmert of homebuilding, and prospective decline {later this year in plant expansion are disinflationary influences. You can make a good argument either way on how the economy is going to jump out of today's high-level lull. Meanwhile the 21 per cent drop in department store sales from a vear ago for the week ended Jan dircounted. The comparison is with the buyingspree period after the Chinese Red entry into Korea.

Night time, too, is the time when a couple can shop together for big-ticket items-—home furnishings, appliances, and the like. Suburban stores, therefore, tend to stay open more frequently than the big-city store. And in many cases, the central store opens in self defense.
