They. Called Him ‘Doctor'— | Barred From Acting As a Physician
By JOHN V. WILSON A South Side mission director, vho admitted accepting fees for first aid” treatments, was barred
today from practicing medicine without a license Judge Hezzie Pike, Superior
Court 2, granted a temporary inunction against James M. Heller, 840 Harrison St., a man of many whose neighbors call him doctor Testifying in his own defense [ate vesterday, Heller denied five charges of treating patients in a doctor's office in his combination missionsrooming house. On cross-examination, he admitted. however, receiving $3 to treat .a gash on a woman's ankle and dressing a rat bite wound on a boy's lip for free
Called It ‘First Aid’
Heller said he treated the for “first aid in an nergency.” He added “1 did not consider that pracg medicine. They paid me money for a doctor for using his bandages and stuff: And I the money to him.” Altogether, Hellér said, he gave “emergency treatment” to ‘‘probablv six or seven over the last four vears.” . Witnesses for Heller testified
he keeps the “homeopathic” shingle hanging in the mission's Kitchen But they also denied he had ever practiced medicine. Thinks He's Qualified’ Asked why ghe calléd him "doc tor,” one woman who lives in the
mission replied: “I think he's qualified for it. He's got brains enough to know what he’s doing.”
