Fredric March Is in Town— York Urged ‘To Wake Up’

By Henry Butler

Fredric March is another great theater personality who |

[thinks New York has had too much power too long.

In town with Mrs. March (Florence Eldridge) for: the |

three-day run of “The Autumn Garden,”

tonight at the, oa bell with me.” He thinks

play opening Murat, Mr. March last night discussed “the road.” { He upset some popular notions | by describing “road” audiences as| more Tesponsive than Broadway audiences to this serious play. “It's a tough play, but it's had extremely gbod reception on tour,” he said. It did a good 13 weeks in Chicago and, he thinks could have played at least a week more. : Refers to Comparisons

“The play is ‘“Chekhovian,” he said, « referring to the frequent comparisons between Miss Hellan's play and Chekhov's Cherry Orchard.” Its seriousness and its concern with the problems of middle-aged persons who don’t know where they're at or what they should or shouldn't have done make it difficult for some spectators,

“Nowadays, if- you haven't got a Bock comedy or smash tragedy, you're out of luck. In between is no good,” he said. In “Show Biz" fashion he discussed other road shows, deploring this season's famine. Much of that famine is the fault of the New York management stranglehold, he said. New

His wife and co-star, Eidridge, last night was too tired for interviews, “She's tuckered out, and I don’t. blame her,” Mr. March said.

Accompanied by Children -

The Marches’ youngsters are here with them. Penny, 19 and sensitively attractive, is a sophomore at Vassar. Last night she was worried about arrangements for a trip to Columbus, O.

strainedly on a cigar, Mr. March helped her out with long distance phone calls. In came Tony, aged . 18, attending Oak Lane Schoq], preparatory to Temple University, Philadelphia. Pleasantly rugged-looking kid, nice manners, firm handclasp, and I noticed a little pat on the shoulder he gave his father when leaving. It’s a good family. Come and see the parents tonight at the Murat.

York seems to have no notion at all of touring conditions.

Cites ‘Lack of Theaters

“You get in a town you never heard of, and you play in a 4000seat filthy barn where you're afraid to step on the carpet, if there is a carpet. Maybe you draw capacity, maybe 500. What 9do. they know about that kind of thing in New York?” he said. ~ “New York should wake up,” he added, with great emphasis. The whole country now suffers from a lack of theaters, he said, voicing a complaint all newspaper theater scribes have been scribbling for years. Of the local scene, he said, with ¥V |vague recall, * “The Murat sort of
