CA RNAVAL (Op. 9), played by Gyorgy Sandar, pianist, on the two 12:inch sides of Columbia LP record ML-4452. The story is that when Franz Liszt heard this composition for! the first time, he exclaimed, “That shows a mind back of it! It is one of the greatest works I know!” “Carnaval” is the most popular of all Schumann’s extended works for the piano. It is divided into twenty-one little sections, each one bearing a title. Some recall figures of Italian comedy, others are desériptive of friends, still others are mood pieces, It is a refreshing work, distinguished by its lyricism, grace and humor, and Sandor does it full justice. o » »n HAYDN: SURPRISE and DRUM-ROLL SYMPHONIES, played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Sir Thomas Beecham, one on each side’ of Columbia 12-inch LP

record ML-4453. The “Surprise” is really Symphony No. 94 in G Major, and gets its title from an amiable trick the composer plays in the second movement. { The “Drum-roll” is Symphony, No. 103 in E-flat Major, and is 80 named because of an unex-| pected drum-roll in the first move-| ‘ment. Both symphonies belong to Haydn's final and greatest period. From the time of their first per-| formances in 1791 and 1795, they, have always been big hits with concert audiences. Beecham is tops as their interpreter. 8 8 =n DEBUSSY: IBERIA AND LA MER, two outstanding tone-poems by the great French impressionistic composer, one on each side of Columbia 12-inch LP record MI-4434. “Iberia” was recorded by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and is a musical portrait of the colorful life of Spain. “La Mer” (The Sea) is a tonal seascape whose quality is suggested by the titles of the three movements: “From Dawn ‘til Noon on the Sea,” “Play of the Waves,” and “Dialogue of the Wind and the Sea.” It was beautifully played for this record by the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York with Dimitri Mitropoulos conducting. #“ s un 2 SCHUBERT: QUINTET IN C MAJOR (Op. 163) performed by the Budapest String Quartet on the two sides of Columbia 12-inch LP record ML-4437. This is considered to be one of the great masterpieces of music. It was written during the last year of Schubert's life, when he was only 31 years old and just contracting the typhus from which he died in a few months. Because of that circumstance, some earlier| commentators tried to read all] sorts of morbid interpretations] into various passages; actually, its| accents. are those of poised, deepseeing, nobly realistic contemplation. The Budapest Quartet, un-| paralleled chamber music ensemble, has been augmented by a second cello to play this Quintet. " = 8 BARTOK: MUSIC FOR STRINGS, PERCUSSION AND CELESTA is an unusual record (Columbia 12-inch LP MIL-4456) made by Herbert von Karajan and the Philharmonic Orchestra under the auspices of the Maharaja of Mysore’s Musical Foundation. Lovers of “modern music” will be intrigued by this remarkable composition, which requires the division of the string players into two groups, one to the left and the other to the right of the conductor, with the percussion play-| ers between them, and the double) basses behind the percussions. us »n ¥ FRANCK: SONATA IN A MA-| JOR for Violin and Piano is| played by Isaac Stern, violin, and| Alexander Zakin, piano, on Colum-| bia 10-inch LP record ML-2204.| This is one of the handful of out-| standing compositions on which the reputation of the Prolifi| Cesar Franck 1s built] Critics
