"THE absorbing story of
from ancient times until - ;.. the present have influenced all modern fashion” is told dramatically by a series of dolls, two feet high, dressed
which are on display in the ‘window of Page Boy Maternity Shop. . Three significant f ions are ‘pictured here. The "peignoir, left, of rich brocade trimmed with lace and velvet bows, w worn by a French actress in 1703 for her role as an expeétant princess. It has been adapted in today's fashions as a “pyramid” coat as well as a favorite boudoir fashion.
The first dirndl skirt, shirred across the stomach, originated as a maternity -fashion in:the 15th century. Because it was difficult to keep the hemline even in a maternity gown, it became the generally popular fashion to have the skirt shorter in front to reveal a. fabulous underskirt. o = u
IN THE 14TH century when the population had been depleted by constant wars, Charles le Bel, king of France, determined to make child-bear-ing fashionable. He ordered a new style to be evolved to give all women, anticipating or not, a full silhouet. The style, forerunner of our redingote, is shown at the right. Long panniers fall from the wrists and completely conceal the front of the skirt when the arms were crossed under the bosom. This posture was effected by all women of the day and became as widespread as the “debutante slouch” of the '20s. In 1850 the Empress Eugenie
increased the size of her crinolines to “conceal her condition.” The use of large crinoline petticoats remained the height of

How Should Partner Read Signals at Opening Leads
PLAYERS like Mr. Masters have a lot of ways to send legitimate mes-
sages to partner. Of course jt takes a good, alert
| partner to understand some of
. them.
How would you have
read the message Masters’ opening lead in this deal? He decided to open a heart in response to his partner's overcall. Holding four or more -of partner's bid suit, the standard, accepted lead is the fourth highest card—in this case, the six spot. But Mr. Masters opened the DEUCE.
MISS BRASH won the first trick with the ace of hearts and watched Mr. Dale drop the queen, She was good enough to realize that something funny was going on. Why the deuce? Mr, Dale's
Mr. Dale
queen of hearts looked like a-
singleton and the. bidding of the hand strongly suggested that he actually did have just one heart, It was clear that Mr. Masters had none of the top hon-« ors in clubs or diamonds. Probably he had little or nothing in the spade suit. Obviously, then, he had made his four heart bid principally on distributional values.

Baby calf envelope-type compact kits can also be had ‘in any number of lovely pastel shades. As an added attraction, most of these beauty accessories leave just enough room for doorkey and money.

The evidence seemed overwhelming that Mr. Masters had started with more than four hearts. If so, his deuce lead, being an unnatural law, must be a signal of some sort. After some thought Miss Brash figured the lead of the lowest heart was asking for the return of the lower of the other two plain suits; In other words, clubs. On this foasoning Miss Brash forgot about a trump return, which 'she had at first considered, and led back a small club. Mr. Masters ruffed and subsequently Mr. Dale could find no way to avoid the loss of a straight club trick, for down one,
