Charges Sheriff
Gave Escaped
Woman
Favors
By JOHN V. WILSON * : % A woman who used a matron’s key to escape last night had “full sway” of the Marion Couhty, Jail under orders of Sheriff Dan Smith, a former matron -charged
today. The matron, who quit Dec, 3 over conflicting orders on safekeeping of the escaped prisoner, Mrs. Lissa P. Hanson, 35, told The Times: “We had orders to treat Lissa good because she did crocheting for the sheriff and Mrs, Eve Wooley (another matron). '
Expected ‘Trouble’
“I had kept her locked up because I knew she was going to §
cause trouble, But they showed her all kinds of considerations and gave her full sway.”
Mrs. Hanson, a comely brunet }
accused as a bad-check artist, and a 17-year-old girl walked
out of the jail after taking the ¥
door keys from a kitchen table.
The keys were left on the table by a matron, Mrs. Bertha
As "Missing PANMUNJOM, Korea, Dec. 26 ~The Communists claimed today | that 571 missing American war prisoners have been killed by Allied planes and guns or have died of disease. Another 152 American prisoners /have “escaped” and three have been “released,” the Red
truce negotiators informed the United Nations command.
Names of another 332 Americans missing from a Communist list of prisoners are being investigated, the Reds said. Thus the Reds claimed to account for 1058 missing GIs. In addition, it was disclosed, the United Nations command has asked the Communists to account for 25 more Americans and 20 Britons listed as prisoners.
‘Shocking’ Errors
United Nations spokesman Brig. Gen. William P. Nuckols called the Communist report on the 1058 missing men “shocking” and full of glaring discrepancies.” He said none of those listed as escaped or| released ever reached the United Nations lines. . The names in question had been recorded by the United Nations
8 command, over a long period, { from Communist propaganda

The former matron, who asked that her name be withheld, said she resigned after objecting to orders of Mrs. Wooley to let Mrs. » Hanson out of her cell. He said he was undecided on whether to take disciplinary action against her. “I have a standing order that all prisoners must be. in. their cells by 5:30 p. m.” he said, “and I want to find out why this was disregarded.” ‘ Chief Jailer Morris Settles said the escape of the two women brought to at least seven the number of prisoners’ who have fled this year. The other five were recaptured within hours, he said. Mrs. Hanson was awaiting trial
negotiations: The Reds handed the United Nations team a foot-high parcel containing the first mail from Allied prisoners in Communist camps to their families. Urgent preparations .were made to forward mail to the United States.

Mistaken About Gas The fire began at 7:30 a. my] when Mrs. Burge tried to burn what she thought was kerosene borrowed from a neighbor. Contents of the can proved to be gasoline, according to firemen.
