“The Tanks Are Coming” Is also set for the 25th. Steve Cochran and Mari Aldon are billed in this film, which-will be at the Lyric.

The other picture to open Tuesday is the Anne Francis-William | Lundigan-Clifton Webb vehicle, “Elopement.” It will be at the Circle. The Esquire is featuring Alastair Sim as Scrooge in “The Christmas Carol.” # » » Something Big Special mention is made here of the great technicolor specacle, “Quo Vadis” (Loew’s, Tuesday). Based on the Nobel Prize Winning novel of the same name hy Henryk Sienkiewicz, the film tells of the fall of Rome. The Roman Empire stretched from England to Greece, yet it was not a for-| eign power that brought its defeat. It was internal strife and jealousy, plus the madness of “its ruler, Nero. The rise of Christianity, which coincided with the tumble of Rome, was abetted by the people who wished to worship any God who did not teach murder and persecution. Pertraying Nero is the wellknow British actor, writer "and producer, Peter Ustinov. His acting 1s superb, making ' the audience realize what a powercrazed maniac Nero was. His facial expressions, which demonstrate the Emperor's insanity,! change as a light can be switched | off and on. The hero, but at times a villian, i= Robert Taylor, enacting the patrician warrior ‘Marcus Vinicius. His conversion into .Christendom denotes the entire downfall of Rome, ™ A. major role of Petronius is played by Leo Genn. Nero believes him to be the only court noble ‘to appreciate the Emperor's singing, but orders him killed upon discovering he is a traitor. Committing sucide, Petronius gains revenge in form of a posthumous note. Others of importance cast of 30,000 include

Bob Hope isn't content with playing one part in a movie--he must play two in “My Favorite Spy’ - (Indiana, Tuesday). One character he enacts is a hardened spy, Eric Augustine. The other is a ham actor named Peanuts White.

Augustine is sent to Tangier with $1,000,000 to purchase a microfilm] containing important war secrets’ When he is wounded, Peanuts, a dead ringer for Augustine, is subsituted.

Hedy IL.amarr, Augustine's girl, is included in the deal. Peanuts doesn’t find her hard to take. While boning up for his spy job. Peanuts is taught to kiss with such gusto that a run will appear in the gal's hose. When he osculates with Hedy, the procedure backfires. 7 Hope and Miss though neither is known as a vocalist, do a song each. Bob sings “1 Wind Up—Taking a Fall” and Hedy singles “Just a Moment More.” Near the end of the movie -Peaputs is given a shot of truth serum by villain Karl Brubaker (Francis L. Sullivan). Does Peanuts become unreserved in his talk? He certainly does, but not in the way Brubaker expects. Peanuts believes himself to be a great actor and the serum gives him a chance to prove it.

= x = Movie War

Whether in sports or war, team work is much more effective than individualism. ‘The Tanks Are

Lamarr, al-

Coming” (Lyric, Tuesday) is a]

tale of conversion of a ‘one man army’ to this principle. Steve Cochran portrays a tank Sergeant who drives his huge machine into the thick of the German defenses without thought of life or limb. His men dislike him for his ‘glory’ hunting and failute to work in conjunction with the rest of the armored force. Cochran regains. the respect of his crew with all the gallantry of filmdom’s swashbuckler. He attributes his heroic. deeds to his men—refusing recognition. The Army didn’t think of this, but Hollywood did. A beautiful

Anne Francis and William Lundigan lead their respective movie parents a “marry” chase in “Elopement” (Circle, Tuesday). On the night of her high school graduation, Anne and Bill, her psychology teacher, confess their love. They leave immediately for a marriage mill across the state

Anne's folks (Clifton Webb and Margalo Gillmore) are of the modern type, while Evelyln Varden, Charles Bickford and Tommy Rettigs Bill'd family, are more reserved. and believe in traditions. Clifton Webb, who departs from his Belvedere role, masters a feat that even Mr. Knowr-it-all hasn't blowing bubble gum, He does it in a championship manner, too. For Anne Francis, the film is her first as a star. Although only 20, she.is a veteran of 13 years in radio, television, Broadway plays and summer stock.

As a gift to ‘Marcus, Nero gives him the hostage Lygia (Deborah Kerr). Marcus introduces her to the Emperor and his cousin Petronius (Leo Genn). Lygia, who despises Marcus, escapes. She goes to a Christian (new religious sect] meeting). Marcus follows, but is felled by Lygia's guardian Ursus (Buddy Baer).
