GANGTOK, Sikkim, Dec, 20 (CDN) — The little Himalayan . {country of Sikkim has become the safety gap between Communist China and free India. Sikkim, a nation of squat, slant-| eyed hillmen, lies astride the main| trade routes connecting India w ith, ‘| Tibet. Through its 14,000-foot passes democracy can move north, ! freeing Tibet from the Commu-| nists, or communism can move,

Travel by Oxcart

The motor road from India ends u at. Gangtok, Simmim’s capital, ing a steep valley rimmed with green, | terraced fields. By oxcart and] truck, intérupted by landslides, | trade moves up a narrow river! gorge fron the Indian plains, 60 miles to the south. At Gangtok, burlap sacks of cheap manufactufed goods are transferred to Tibetan caravans of yaks and mules, bound for ws Lhassa road. i Externally Sikkim, with its pa-| goda roofs, 37 Buddhist monas-| teries and long-robed, booted natives, seems more a step-child of Tibet than India. The Maharajah, 58-year-old Tashi Namygal, whose ancestors

Matter for Rejoicing

A,Sikkim princess presented the court with a first child 1ast year only four months after her marriage to an officer of a Tibetan trade mission. But her act was a matter for rejoicing rather than scandal, in the free-and-easy Tibetan code of the Sikkim royal, house. Two years ago when an upheaval occurred in the tiny kingdom, India stepped in, just as Britain regularly did after it made Sikkim a protectorate of the empire in 1904. India sent two polished Oxford-graduated In-| dians to take over Sikkim’s for- I eign affairs and internal adminis-| tration. The able Indians found that ag “lessee” racket was the cause of] the trouble.
