Christmas

~ Safety Hints Offered

“[DECK the halls with boughs of holly . .."” is a warm and wondrous

thought on these gay preChristmas days, but unfortunately—it also brings to mind the possibility that danger, destruction and even death may be lurking nearby. Like it or not, this is the time of year when your home is

most often invaded by fire and.

accident. The most popular point of attack is the brightly lit and. silvery-tinseled Christmas tree. The warmth of a radiator, fireplace or television set is enough to start a fire. According to the National Safety Council, the tree takes ail of two minutes to completely burn up, and a blaze can roar through your home before you have a chance to do anything about it. 2 ” ” 3 TO KEEP your tree-a symbol of happiness rather than tragedy, take these simple but vital precautions. Put off the actual purchase of your tree until Christmas Eve. You can test its freshness by shaking it to see if any needles fall, but, if that is impossible, as soon as you have the tree home, throw water all over it, Then cut about an inch off the trunk end, on a slant, to open the pores for drawing up water. ” » n

TREE DECORATIONS can

be dangerous, too. They should -

be made of glass and metal, and if colored lights are used, bé sure all the wires are in perfect condition. Provide a switch at some distance from the tree for turning lights on and off, .and never leave the tree lights burning when no one is home. If the decorations at the base of your tree include a “snow scene,” you are tempting fate unless it’s made of flameproof cotton or a white sheet sprin-. kled with fireproof snow. To be extra safe, don’t set up the electric trains around the tree. - And as the holiday progresses, watch for browning needles. They mean it's time for the tree to come down.

a bid even on a four-card suit and with a fairly weak hand, when your suit is next above the suit bid By the enemy. The reason is that such a bid contains no bidding space. ” ® » SUCH A situation arose in today’s deal. Mr. Dale doubled and Miss Brash redoubled. The opening bid was one club. Mr. Masters promptly bid one diamond because that call did not shut out any bids for his partner. Mr. Dale could still bid hearts or spades at the one

level, just as if Mr. Masters had passed. As a matter of fact it would have been proper for Mr. Masters to come in with a one diamond bid on a four-card dia-

It may be that what our dependent child needs to speed up his self-confidence is an independent earning and working experience, It may be that he needs a parent to show interest in his search for summer job opportunities—interest that is not too heavily salted with references to the great courage, perserverance and wisdom that has earned his own present state of solvency.

five diamonds, as he was by no means sure that he could defeat a four heart contract, Actually, the only tricks his side could have won were the ace of spades, a spade ruff and the king of hearts. Five clubs turned out to be a very fine “sacrifice” when Mr. Masters easily won eleven tricks. Mr. Abel opened the king of clubs, which Miss Brash overtook to lead a trump. Mr, Masters won the second trick in his own hand and led a heart toward the king. After losing to the ace of hearts he simply cross-ruffed the hand for the rest of the tricks.
