|taken place in the past 12 months. It gained momentum from the new researches with cortisone and ACTH but its beginnings are to \be found in the organization of {the Arthritis and Rheumatism! Foundation three years ago. | Despite the fact that arthritis lis at least 300 million years old,
deal with: it was made until three |years ago. Until then, the world {faced the disease with practically’ the same hopelessness that had, marked the previous centuries. || | We know that the crippling |disease is at least 300 million |years old because the fossilized |bones of dinosaurs show that the lancient beasts suffered from it.) |Some students think that arthritis! may have been the reason that,
New York Central’s tne gigantie reptiles became ex-/
streamlined | Old as Human Race
Apparently arthritis has plagued {mankind since the start of the {human race. The bones of the |Java ape-man of Pithecanthropus, {the oldest “missing link” known to science, show that this low|browed ancestor of mankind had {arthritis History reveals that the ancient, | Egyptians, Greek, and Romans, the Crusaders of the Middle Ages, land the American Indians all |suffered from the disease. | When the foundation began its |work three years ago, a nation{wide survey revealed that only | $300, 000 was being spent annually, lon research by individual inivestigators and research institu-| tions. In the training of doctors at| {medical schools and in post-! {graduate courses, arthritis and {rheumatism were at the bottom of the list of diseases. | Only about 1000 physicians in this country have been trained to {specialize in these ailments. For years arthritis received only casual and superficial attention {from most physicians.
. Facilities Are Sparse
There are only 179 arthritis clinic in the entire country, and lonly 65 hospitals “or clinic beds endowed specifically for arthritis |victims. By way of comparison, lit is worth noting that there are {100,000 free beds in the United |States- for patients with tuberculosis. Yet 10 times as many people have arthritis and rheumatism € las have tuberculosis. | The Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation now has chapters in 28 states. These chapters are now actively directing programs for the relief for arthritis suf-| fg ferers. : | Public contributions to the [foundation] in the past 12 months {have exceeded one million dollars. | 'Many communities are turning ® to the foundation for help in| gf setting up local programs to aid 'arthritis victims. In the past year the foundation has spent over $250,000 on medi-, ‘cal research while the total ex-| pended by all other private re-| |search institutions has risen into the millions. Medical men are showing a new interest in the basic mecha-| |nisms of the ductless glands and {other problems which underlie ‘arthritis and rheumatism.

Shirley Brothers has served the people of Indian apolis and Marion County for over half a century. That it has served satisfactorily, is attested by the Shirley reputation . . » and by the ever-growing demand for its services: there are now four Shirley chapels, beautifully appointed, completely equipped, in locations readily accessible from any
patt of the community.
Though "larger" now than it was in 1898, Shirley Brothers' basic aim is the same as always: "Truly
