‘Caddy’ for San Francisco Star
By MILTON RICHMAN United ‘Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, Dec. 17 — Joe DiMaggio got his start in professional baseball as Augie Galan’s “caddy.” In ball players’ language, a “caddy” is the fifth-stringer who takes over the late innings when the “star” feels like taking a rest.
At the time, September, 1932, to be exact, Galan wasn’t what you would call a star but he was the first string shortstop for S8an Francisco of the Pacific Coast League and his tongue was hanging out from playing 183 games. El a : GALAN, LATER destined to become a top-notcher in his own right with the Cubs and Dodg-
ers, was glad to see anybody
at this point, particularly anyone who said he was a short“stop. “This is the kid brother I've been telling you about,” Seal Outfielder Vince DiMaggio told his Manager James C. Caveney, introducing - 17-year-old Joe.
“Well, he’s big enough,” Caveney declared, appraising the youth, “but it looks to me like he can use some more weight. Maybe we’ll be able to use him at shortstop before the season winds up.”
The Seals weren't in pennant. contention any more and Galan looked like he could use a rest

so the pea-green Joe got his chance. LN BY ACTUAL count, Joe got into three games. He went to bat nine times, stroked a double and a triple and wound up with an innocent-looking .222 average. He was no wonder in the field, either, one of his throws landing five rows up in the grandstand. It would be a bald-faced lie to say anyone noticed any signs of greatness about DiMaggio then. The big league scouts that year concentrated on such PCL standouts as Frank Demaree, Bob Johnson, Lou Finney and a smooth-fielding first baseman with Sacramento by the name of Dolph Camilli.
“Don’t get discouraged,” Vince told Joe. “It was just a start.”
» n n THE SEALS invited Joe to report back to them the following spring. Caveney wisely converted him into an outfielder and almost.overnight DiMaggio became a sensation. ~ He electrified the baseball world by hitting safely in 61 straight games, gradually eased older brother Vince out of ‘the center field job and wound up the 1933 season with a .340 mark. During 1934—a year in which he hit 341 for ‘the Seals "the New York Yankees.sent not one, but two ‘scouts, Bill Essick and Joe Devine—to give

DiMag the double-o. They watched while Joe hit .398 in 1935. -
“Looks lke a world beater,” the scouts wired back, “but an injured knee makes him a ques3 tion mark.” The Yankees then delegated a physician to examine DiMaggio's knee and when the doctor said it would hold up, they turned over $25,000 and five players to.San Francisco and summoned the gawky, gangling “boy wonder” to join them in spring training in 1936.
