A 27-year-old escaped convict faced life imprisonment today for
kidnaping a West Side family of three June 19. Joe Edward Brown of Indianapolis was convicted by a Criminal Court. 1 jury late yesterday after more than six hours dehberation. Judge , Harry 0. Chamberlin deldyed imposing the imdndatory sentence until Dec. 22. The postponement was asked by . court-appointed lawyers for Brown, who said they planned to ask a new trial. Brown was convicted of forcing Donald F. Borgman, 611 Taft St.,
‘his wife and 214-year-old son, into]
a wild, high-speed ride over northwest Indianapolis to escape pursuing police. The family later was released unharmed. Two other men, - accuséd as Brown's companions, are awaiting trial ‘'on similar charges. Brown was captured July 5 by FBI agents who sought him for escaping from the Indiana Reformatory in May. On July 24, he and three other prisoners escaped from deputy sheriffs but were recaptured within two days.

Selective burglars last night passed up cheaper household articles to take more than $5000 worth of watches, lighters and compacts at Home Mercantile Co.,'! 1828 Central Ave. Manager Marvin Axelrod said a hasty check revealed loss of 70 wristwatches valued at $4286, plus 64 cigaret lighters worth $638 and 30 compacts worth $180. The burglary was discovered this morning by an employee who opened the office-storehouse of the door-to-door retail firm. Thieves had broken a front door glass to gain entry.
