NEW YORK, Dec. 13— Apry, a poodle, is today the proud possessor of a 1951 Merit Award from Made-

moiselle magazine.

For the ninth year in succession, awards were presented to 10 young women who—with one exception—are between the ages of 17 and 32 and “who have already distinguished themselves in their fields and are expected to achieve even greater honors.” according to Betsy Talbot Blackwell, Mademoiselle’s editor-in-chief. In making the award to the exception, three-year-old Apry, who belongs to comedienne Imogene Coca, Mrs. Blackwell cited poodle (cloth) “top dog” for lifting 1951's apparel fabrics into three dimensions. “Bred in the woolen mills,” she ‘said, “poodle has endeared a new brand of crinkly, lumpy, bumpy, slightly wild and woozy fabric to the (fashion-wise;

ELSIE FRANKFURT of Dallas, business executive, who,

fresh out of college, borrowed -

$500, went into business with Her two sisters in a rented loft. From that unlikely beginning she rose to the presidency of the Page Boy Maternity Co., and last September became the first woman member of the Young Presidents Organization,

dents of million-dollar corporations before the age of 39.

MAUREEN STAPLETON of New York, stage actress, who in 1951 (just seven years after arriving in New York with $100 in her pocket) soared to stardom on Broadway with her brilliant portrayal of Serafina in “The Rose Tattoo.” She is now on a nation-wide tour in the Tennessee Williams play.
