We, ‘the Women—

Man Ducks the Work When There's to Be Party

By RUTH MILLETT

AFTER the guests arrive he is a charming host. But any wife will tell you that a man feels absolutely no

responsibility for a party before the guests arrive.

Half an' hour before the first guest arrives, you will

find the man of the house doing one of the following things: Taking a quick nap to get in shape for the evening. That means he probably won't be at the door to greet the first guests and that Mama will make it by the skin of her teeth. That's because, of. } course, she y has to remake - Ruth Millett the bed in the room she had

so foolishly figured was all ready for company. Racing across -town to buy the wine he was reminded only three times to buy on his way home from the office. a» " n RIPPING through the bookshelves to find a book he's promised to lend Joe or yanking everything out of his closet -to find something he hasn't worn or thought of wearing in a year.

Snitching canapes from the perfectly arranged tray his wife hoped would win oohs and ahs from the feminine guests, Dowr at the corner getting the hair-cut he has been needing for a week. " » ” STARTING a rough house game with the kids in the mids dle of the living room. Telling the lady of the house he needs a business letter that is probably put away with all the other things quickly shoved into drawers to make -the house look spie and span. None of the advice to would-be serene hostesses ever tells a woman how to maintain her calm and poise through this kind of last minute, frantic search. », ” 2 o THAT'S about as much help as any wife gets from even the most charming and affable of hosts. A woman will work two days to get ready to be a hostess. A man assumes the rolé at the split second when the first guest rings the door bell.
